I cannot attach large files to emails on Synology MailPlus. What can I do?

Purpose

Most email servers have a size limit for attachments. For example, Gmail refuses to send emails with more than 25 MB of attachments. Likewise, MailPlus has a total attachment size limit of 10 MB. This article explains how to allow your client users to send large attachments on MailPlus.

Resolution

Increase the size limit

Launch MailPlus Server and set a loose limit at the following locations:

  • Domain > Usage Limit > Sending limit
  • Mail Delivery > General > Maximum size per email (MB)

Customize a user policy

After raising the general size limit, if you want to restrict certain users from sending large attachments, you can set a user policy with a lower size limit and apply it to the target users.

  1. Launch MailPlus Server.
  2. Go to Account > User Policy and click Add.
  3. Enter a smaller value for Single Attachment Size (MB) on Mail Delivery.

Use links instead of attachments

Recipient servers may also have a size limit that causes emails with large attachments to be rejected. As an alternative, MailPlus supports generating shared links for attachments.

  1. Launch MailPlus Server.
  2. Go to Service > MailPlus Client.
  3. Tick the checkbox of Allow users to create shared links for large attachments.
