Copy or Move Files or Folders
Follow the steps below to move or copy files or folders.
Method 1:
- Select the files or folders you want to move or copy. (Press and hold Shift or Ctrl while making multiple selections.)
- Choose Cut or Copy from the Action drop-down menu.
- Go to the destination folder on Synology Router or your computer.
- Choose Paste - Overwrite or Paste - Skip from the Action drop-down menu, depending on whether you want to overwrite files or folders with the same name in the destination folder.
Method 2:
- Select the files or folders you want to move or copy. (Press and hold Shift or Ctrl while making multiple selections.)
- Drag the folders or files from the main section to another folder on the left panel.
- In the pop-up menu that appears, choose Copy - Overwrite, Copy - Skip, Move - Overwrite, or Move - Skip to overwrite or skip files or folders with the same name in the destination folder.
Method 3
- Select the files or folders you want to move or copy. (Press and hold Shift or Ctrl while making multiple selections.)
- Press Ctrl + X to cut or Ctrl + C to copy the files/folders. For Mac users, press Command + X and Command + C.
- Go to the destination folder on Synology Router or your computer.
- Press Ctrl + V to paste the files/folders. (Command + V for Mac.)
- In the dialog that appears, choose whether you want to overwrite or skip files with the same name in the destination folder.
Keyboard Shortcuts:
The following keyboard shortcuts may come in handy when moving/copying files and folders in File Station:
- F2: Rename
- Del: Delete
- Ctrl + A: Select all
- Crtl + X: Cut
- Crtl + C: Copy
- Crtl + V: Paste
Note:
- When copying or moving files/folders to a directory in FAT file system, characters \ *?">| in the filename will be replaced by –, and the Metadata of Mac files will be deleted.
- If you cut files from your local computer, and then paste them in a Synology Router folder, the files will still be retained on your local computer.
- When moving a file or folder, the "owner" remains the same. However, when copying a file or folder, the "owner" changes to the user who copied it.
To enable smart drag and drop:
When you drag and drop files within File Station, this feature will automatically determine whether the transfer is a copy or move action.
- Select Enable smart drag and drop.
- Select either action to be always performed if there happens to be another user simultaneously transferring files with the same name to the same location:
- Overwrite: Your transferred files will overwrite files with the same name.
- Skip: Your transferred files will be skipped and not overwrite files with the same name.
- Click OK.
Note:
If you want to change the copy or move action determined by smart drag and drop, apply the following hotkeys to suit your needs:
- To shift to a copy action: Press Ctrl while performing drag and drop.
- To shift to a move action: Press Shift while performing drag and drop.
