How do I access virtual machines from the Internet?
Purpose
This article lists different ways to access your virtual machines from outside the local network.
Resolution
The methods of accessing virtual machines from the Internet vary with different operating systems of virtual machines.
For Virtual DSM (VDSM)
Virtual DSM (VDSM) can be viewed as a normal DSM. Refer to this article to set up external access for your VDSM.
For virtual machines running Microsoft, Linux, or other OS
- Create shared links:
You can create a shared link of the virtual machine to allow other users to access the virtual machine from the internet. Follow the steps below to create a shared link for your virtual machine.1- Enable QuickConnect service (DSM 7.x/DSM 6.2) or DDNS service (DSM 7.x/DSM 6.2) to allow external access.
- Go to Virtual Machine Manager > Virtual Machine.
- Select the desired virtual machine, and click Action > Create share link.
- You can set up Validity period and Enable secure sharing for managing the security of virtual machine connection.
- Click Save. After saving the settings, you can manage the shared link in Action > Shared Links Manager.
- Configure port forwarding rules:
You can configure port forwarding rules for virtual machines on your router based on the specific services you want to access. For example, to access Windows Remote Desktop Services on your virtual machines, TCP port 3389 is required. For Synology routers, refer to this article to configure port forwarding rules. For the configuration of other routers, refer to the documentation provided by your router's manufacturer.
