Configure bandwidth control

Effectively managing incoming and outgoing traffic on backup appliances prevents backup or data transfer activities from consuming your organization's bandwidth.

Bandwidth control in ActiveProtect Manager

ActiveProtect allows you to customize the total inbound and outbound bandwidth limits for each backup appliance. To minimize the impact of data transfer on production network bandwidth, you can restrict external network connections when copying backup data offsite or to the cloud. You can also restrict specific segments to optimize endpoint backups to the backup appliance via Wi-Fi or VPN.

The configured bandwidth is evenly distributed among all concurrently processing jobs within the backup appliance. Bandwidth restrictions apply to all network interfaces and ports, restricting all incoming and outgoing traffic. This includes UI operations, backups, backup copies, restore, and download jobs.

Additionally, you can set multiple bandwidth control rules for each backup appliance to address various traffic needs across different segments.

Add bandwidth control rule

  1. Go to Infrastructure > Backup Server.
  2. Select a backup appliance > Bandwidth Control > Add Rule.
  3. Enter the following information:
    • Name
    • Type: Inbound or outbound
    • Apply rule to:
      • Specific IP addresses
      • Specific IP range
      • Specific subnet
      • Public IP addresses1
    • Bandwidth limit
  4. Click Add.

Note:

  1. Any IPv4 address outside the following ranges is considered a public IP address:
    • 10.0.0.0/8
    • 172.16.0.0/12
    • 169.254.0.0/16

Bandwidth control rules configuration scenario

You can add multiple bandwidth control rules. When rules conflict, higher-listed rules have priority. When multiple devices follow the same rule, the bandwidth will be distributed evenly among these devices during concurrent activities.

Example:

Rule A: Limits total incoming traffic from 10.17.1.1-10.17.1.100 to 100 MB/s

Rule B: Limits total incoming traffic from 10.17.1.50-10.17.1.155 to 200 MB/s

  • Rule A takes priority over Rule B.
  • When device A (located at 10.17.1.20) is backing up, Rule A will be applied.
  • When device B (located at 10.17.1.70) is backing up, Rule A will be applied.
  • When device C (located at 10.17.1.110) is backing up, Rule B will be applied.
  • Since both devices A and B follow Rule A, 50 MB/s will be allocated to each device when backing up simultaneously.
