LUN
Before creating a LUN, you need to create a volume in Storage Manager.
To create a LUN:
- Click Create.
- Select the LUN type you want to create.
- Follow the wizard to complete the process.
Note:
- New LUNs cannot be created when a volume has less than 1 GB of free space.
- When a Thick Provisioned LUN is created on Synology Unified Controller, all the LUN's blocks will be initialized, which may result in a longer creation time but will provide an optimized I/O performance when data is written into the LUN for the first time.
- Thick Provisioned LUNs support only Hardware-Assisted Zeroing and Hardware-Assisted Locking.
- You can enable the advanced features to support corresponding VMware VAAI features.
- You can enable Hardware-Assisted Data Transfer so that the LUNs can support Windows Offload Data Transfer (ODX) at the same time.
- The advanced features can only be enabled during the initial creation of a Standard LUN. This setting cannot be changed afterwards.
- The number of supported LUNs varies depending on models. For detailed product specifications, please refer to our official website.
Terminologies:
- Hardware-Assisted Zeroing: Helps VMware ESXi hosts to initialize virtual disks with better efficiency when creating new virtual disks.
- Hardware-Assisted Locking: Locks only required parts of a LUN when a VMware ESXi host accesses data on it, allowing multiple VMware ESXi hosts to access the same LUNs simultaneously without compromising the performance.
- Hardware-Assisted Data Transfer: Data transferring can be done quickly on your Synology Unified Controller without taking up the resource of the hosts when copying data on VMware ESXi and Microsoft Hyper-V hosts.
- Snapshot: With the help of Btrfs file system features, instant snapshots and replication are available.
- Space Reclamation: Supports space reclamation command of the initiator. When data is deleted or transferred, the space they used will be released. However, this may affect I/O performance.
To remove a LUN:
When removing a LUN, all data on the LUN will be deleted. Connections between the LUN and any mapped Targets will also be lost.
- Select the LUN you want to remove.
- Click Remove and follow the wizard to complete the process.
To edit a LUN:
- Select the LUN you want to edit.
- Click Edit.
- Edit the desired properties.
- Click OK to save the settings.
Note:
- To avoid data loss when editing LUN capacity, you can only make it larger than the current size.
- If the status of a LUN changes to Unavailable, it means that some data-related errors occurred while accessing the LUN. In order to avoid severe data loss on your system, this LUN will be temporarily inaccessible. Please contact Synology for support as soon as possible.
If your Synology Unified Controller serves as the storage back end of OpenStack Cinder, LUNs with advanced features will be used when you create Cinder volumes. Operations and management of the LUNs/Targets used by Cinder will be limited on your Synology Unified Controller.
- Cinder LUNs cannot be edited.
- Information such as the name, IQN, mapping, and masking of the Cinder Targets cannot be edited.
- You cannot map Cinder LUNs/Targets to general LUNs/Targets.
- You cannot take snapshots of Cinder LUNs via the Synology Unified Controller user interface nor edit, delete or restore snapshots of Cinder LUNs.
- LUNs cloned from Cinder LUNs/snapshots will become general LUNs.
To clone a LUN:
- Select the LUN you want to clone.
- Select Clone from the Action drop-down menu.
- Edit the name of the cloned LUN and select the destination volume.
- Click OK to start cloning.
Additional Information
- LUNs with snapshot feature enabled can be cloned quickly within the same volume.
- LUN properties will not change after being cloned.
- While you are cloning LUNs without the snapshot feature, it is recommended that you disconnect these LUNs to prevent failed cloning or data inconsistency.
- You cannot clone a LUN when the remaining space of its volume is lower than 1 GB.
Terminologies:
- Thin Provisioning: Thin Provisioning is a method for optimizing storage utilization by allocating storage space in a dynamic and on-demand manner.
- VMware VAAI: The VMware vStorage APIs for Array Integration (VAAI) can offload the work of the standard operations from the server to the storage device in the VMware vSphere environment and optimize the storage performance.
- Windows ODX: Offload Data Transfer (ODX) is a data transfer technology developed by Microsoft. ODX improves transfer performance by offloading some of the workloads to the storage array.
If the data source and destination are located on LUNs that are located on the same volume, cloning will be processed by storage acceleration commands, which saves up to 99.9% of the storage space consumption and accelerates cloning at the same time. - Target Mapping: Map the LUN to one or more targets.
- Synology Storage Console: Synology Storage Console is a storage management plugin on VMware vSphere Client or Windows Server that simplifies managing and monitoring multiple Synology storage systems. It also allows you to take application-consistent snapshots directly from Synology Unified Controller.
- For VMware environments, the plugin is only compatible with VMware vCenter Server Appliance 6.5 U2 or above versions.
- You can download the plugin at Download Center and refer to Synology Storage Console for VMware and Synology Storage Console for Windows for more information.
