Fully restore virtual machines to VMware and Hyper-V
In case of a primary virtual machine failure, recover an entire virtual machine to its most recent state or a previous point in time from a backup file. This method provides full I/O performance in the restored virtual machines but requires more resources and time compared to an instant restore.
Usage scenario
Full restore is recommended when optimal I/O performance is required and some downtime is acceptable.
Launch the restore wizard
To restore a single machine:
- Go to Machines > Virtual Machines and select the virtual machine you want to restore.
- Click the More menu on the upper bar and select Open Recovery Portal.
- In the Recovery Portal, choose the target version and click Restore To Virtual Machine.
To restore multiple machines:
- Go to Machines > Virtual Machines and select the virtual machines you want to restore.
- Click the More menu on the upper bar and select Restore to virtual machine.
- Choose the version to restore. Select the most recent backup or narrow down versions by time.
Configure restore settings
Follow these steps in the restore wizard to configure settings:
- Select Full restore.
- If the version is stored in multiple locations, you can choose the location to restore the data from.
- Choose between VMware and Hyper-V1. Then, click Next to proceed with the following destination settings:
- For cross-platform restoration (e.g., from VMware to Hyper-V), configure virtual machine settings in the subsequent steps.
- For same-platform restoration (e.g., from VMware to VMware), choose either of the following options:
- Restore to original location: Restores the selected virtual machine to its original location, maintaining its original name and settings, which minimizes the chance of input errors. This option automatically unregisters and replaces the original virtual machine on the production site.
- Restore to a new location, or with different settings: Allows you to customize the destination and settings for the restored virtual machine.
- Review the operation summary. Decide whether to power on the virtual machine after restoration. Click Done to start the restoration.
Configure virtual machine settings
Customize the settings for the restored virtual machine, including its location and network.
- Specify the hypervisor. Select from existing hypervisors added to the ActiveProtect site or use a different one.2
- Follow the on-screen instructions to specify the virtual machine name, operating system, destination folder, host, resource pool, datastore, and network adapter.
