How do I install Synology Guest Tool on virtual machines?
Purpose
Installing Synology Guest Tool on your virtual machines in Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) can help enhance their performance and make managing easier. After the installation, you will be able to do the following:
- Shut down/restart virtual machines in VMM
- Detect IP addresses of guest operating systems
- Take file system consistent snapshots

Install Synology Guest Tool on Windows
When you install Synology Guest Tool on Windows1, QEMU guest agent and VirtIO drivers will also be installed. The VirtIO driver is a virtualization solution for network and disk drivers to offer better network and disk performance.
- Do either of the followings to download the installer:
- Go to Download Center, select your model, go to the Desktop Utilities section, and download Synology Guest Tool for Virtual Machine Manager.
- Open Virtual Machine Manager, go to Image > ISO File and click Download Synology Guest Tool.
- Go to Virtual Machine, select a virtual machine and click Action > Edit. On the Others tab, select a Synology Guest Tool file for Additional ISO file. Click OK to save the settings. The ISO file of Synology Guest Tool will be loaded as a CD-ROM after the virtual machine starts.
- Select the virtual machine and click Connect.
- Run Synology_VMM_Guest_Tool.msi on CD-ROM and follow the instructions in the wizard.
Install QEMU Guest Agent on Linux
- Select the virtual machine and click Connect.
- Enter
sudo -i
for administrator's permissions. - Install QEMU guest agent with either of the commands:
- For Ubuntu operating system
- For RedHat/CentOS/Fedora operating systems
apt-get install qemu-guest-agent
yum install qemu-guest-agent
Notes:
- For Windows 11 virtual machines, follow the steps below to install WMIC before installing Synology Guest Tool:
- On your Windows 11 virtual machine, click Start > Settings > System.
- Click Optional features on the left panel.
- Click Add an optional feature > View Feature.
- Find and select WMIC in the list. Click Next and Install.
