This message may appear due to incorrect configuration. Please check each of the settings below:

  • Make sure SMB service has been enabled on your Synology NAS.
      1. Sign in to DSM using an account belonging to the administrators group.
      2. Make sure the Enable SMB service option is ticked at the following locations:
        • For DSM 7.0 and above: Go to Control Panel > File Services > SMB.
        • For DSM 6.2 and earlier: Go to Control Panel > File Services > SMB/AFP/NFS > SMB.
  • If firewall has been enabled, make sure firewall on your Synology NAS and Windows computer have been set to allow SMB access (i.e., ports 137, 138, 139, or 445 are NOT blocked).
    • Go to Control Panel > Security > Firewall > Firewall Profile > Edit Rules > Ports > Select from a list of built-in applications > Select and make sure Windows file server (or ports 137, 138, 139, or 445) has not been selected and set to Deny. For more information on how to set up firewall, refer to this article.
  • Make sure Windows client has enabled Client for Microsoft Networks on the Ethernet adapter. On your computer, go to Settings > Network & Internet, click Change adapter options, right-click on the network connection, and select Properties.
