View Documents, Photos, or Videos
You can easily view documents, videos, or photos in File Station.
Display Options
- To switch display views, click the button at the upper-right corner to display items by list, title, or icons.
- Photo thumbnails are visible if:
- Photos are in indexed folders (Control Panel > Indexing Service > Media Indexing > Indexed Folder) and you have installed Photo Station or Media Server on your Synology NAS.
- The thumbnail data stored in the EXIF entries created by your digital camera are available.
View Files Using Synology Office
You can import files from File Station into Synology Office to edit them with built-in features and easily collaborate with others. Note that modifications made in Synology Office will not sync back to the original file in File Station and vice versa.
- To view files using Synology Office:
- Ensure Synology Office is installed on your Synology NAS.
- In File Station, right-click on a file and choose View > Open in Synology Office.
- Click Import to Synology Office to open the file in Synology Office as a new file.
- Supported formats for import:
- Synology Spreadsheet: .xlsx, .xlsm, .xltx, .xltm, .xls, .xlt, .ods, .ots, .csv
- Synology Document: .docx, .doc, .odf, .rtf (with Document Viewer1 installed)
- Synology Slides: .pptx, .ppt, .odp (with Document Viewer1 installed)
Note:
- Unavailable on certain models.
View Documents in Microsoft Office Online
Using Microsoft Office Viewer, you can view Microsoft Office documents hosted on your Synology NAS with all features intact in a web browser, without needing Microsoft Office installed on your computer.
- To view documents in Microsoft Office Online:
- Ensure QuickConnect is enabled first. Sign in to DSM with an admin account and configure QuickConnect at Control Panel > QuickConnect.
- Right-click on a document and choose View > View in Microsoft Office Online.
- Supported formats:
- Word: .docx, .docm, .dotm, .dotx
- Excel: .xlsx, .xlsb, .xls, .xlsm
- PowerPoint: .pptx, .ppsx, .ppt, .pps, .pptm, .potm, .ppam, .potx, .ppsm
Note:
- File size limit: 10 MB for Word and PowerPoint files, 5 MB for Excel files.
- File names must contain only English letters and numbers.
View Documents in Google Docs
Ensure your Synology NAS is fully accessible over the Internet. If it is behind a router, specify the port forwarding rule for DSM at Control Panel > External Access > Router Configuration. The default port numbers for DSM are 5000 (HTTP) and 5001 (HTTPS). If issues persist, specify the router port for DSM at Control Panel > External Access > Advanced.
- To view documents in Google Docs, right-click on a document and choose View > View in Google Docs.
- Supported formats: .doc, .docx, .ppt, .xlsx, .pdf, .tif
Preview Photos
- To preview photos, right-click on a photo and choose Preview. Use the thumbnail sliding bar at the bottom for quick navigation.
- Supported formats: .jpg, .jpeg, .jpe, .bmp, .gif, .png, .tiff, .tif, .arw, .srf, .sr2, .dcr, .k25, .kdc, .cr2, .crw, .nef, .mrw, .ptx, .pef, .raf, .3fr, .erf, .mos, .orf, .rw2, .raw
Note:
- Starting DSM 7.2.2, File Station will discontinue support for generating HEIC/HEIF thumbnails and previews on Synology NAS through Advanced Media Extensions (AME). Please refer to this article for a workaround.
Play or Preview Sound Files
You can play up to 1,024 sound files at once.
- To play sound files, double-click on one or more sound files to open them with Audio Player. Alternatively, right-click on a sound file and choose Play.1
- To play sound files by folder, click on a single folder, or press Ctrl (for Windows users)/Command (for Mac users) and click on multiple folders. Then right-click the selected folders and choose Play to open them with Audio Player.1
- Supported formats: .mp3, .m4a, .m4b, .ogg, .wav, .flac, .ape, .aiff, .aif, .wma
Note:
- Unavailable on certain models.
Play Videos
If you connect to DSM via the HTTPS protocol, import a trusted certificate (at Control Panel > Security > Certificate) to play videos with File Station.
- To play videos, right-click on a video and choose Play. Video Player will play videos supported by HTML5. Refer to this article for HTML5 videos supported by different web browsers.
- Subtitles are supported if they are named the same and in the same folder as the video file, or are embedded. To use another subtitle, choose it from the drop-down menu.
