- Only use Synology M.2 SSDs that are compatible with your NAS model.2 These SSDs have been thoroughly tested to ensure they can operate in storage pools and remain within the operating temperature range.
- The DSM operating system cannot be installed on M.2 SSDs. For DSM installation to be successful, your Synology NAS must contain at least one drive that is not an M.2 SSD.
- The M.2 form factor is not hot-pluggable. Note the following when using an M.2 SSD storage pool:
- Before you insert or remove any M.2 SSDs, make sure to power off the system completely. Disconnect the power cord and all cables connected to your Synology NAS.3
- Set aside time for maintenance actions, such as drive replacement, storage expansion, RAID-type conversion, and storage pool repair. These actions often involve the insertion/removal of M.2 SSDs and therefore require powering off the system.
- Synology High Availability (SHA) does not support storage pools created using M.2 SSDs.
Notes:
- Available on DSM 7.2 and above.
- Check the Synology Products Compatibility List to see what M.2 SSDs are supported.
- Instructions on how to install/remove an M.2 SSD are available in the product manual of your NAS.
