How do I continue my mobile backup tasks after upgrading to Synology Photos?
Details
If you used to back up mobile photos with Synology Moments or DS photo, enable photo backup for Synology Photos. Although the previous backup tasks cannot be migrated, as long as you set the new task to save photos to the original destination and skip duplicate files, you can achieve the same effect.
Resolution
Backup configuration
- Tap Enable Photo Backup.
- Under Backup Rule, select Back up all photos.1
- Under Backup Path, set the Backup Destination according to your previous mobile app:
- Moments: Select Personal Space.
- DS photo:
- If you backed up to Photo Station: Select Shared Space.
- If you backed up to Personal Photo Station: Select Personal Space.
- Under Destination Path, select Default Folder or Customize. This setting does not affect the detection of duplicate files.
- Tap Enable.
Duplicate file detection mechanism
Synology Photos detects duplicates by comparing new files with existing files in the designated space (Personal Space: /home/Photos, Shared Space: /photo). The checking criteria include:
- The file name
- The time taken
- The hash value of the file
If all values match an existing file, the new file will not be uploaded. This ensures that all data is stored safely without wasting additional space on your Synology NAS.
Notes:
- If you are sure that your backup task on Moments or DS photo was completed and that you have not taken any new photos before installing Synology Photos, you can select Back up new photos only to save time.
- If you still see duplicate files, the problem might be caused by inconsistent formats. Due to compatibility issues, DS photo and Moments 1.3 and earlier versions convert HEIC files to JPEG format during backups. However, Synology Photos now supports HEIC. As a result, the HEIC files previously converted to JPEG format will be recognized as different files and backed up again.
- The Synology Photos mobile app backs up only the latest version of your photos. When you edit a photo before backup, only the edited version is saved to Synology Photos. If you edit a photo after it's already backed up, Synology Photos saves the edited version as a new file.
