Router Traffic Control

Router traffic control is enabled when your Synology NAS is in router mode. Router traffic control (at Control Panel > Network > Router Traffic Control) manages the uploading and downloading traffic running on your Synology NAS private network. When creating rules, you need to specify the Guaranteed Bandwidth and Maximum Bandwidth to limit uploading and downloading traffic.

Term Explanation

  • Guaranteed Bandwidth: Defines the outgoing traffic a service guarantees to serve when the whole system bandwidth is sufficient.
  • Maximum Bandwidth: Defines the outgoing traffic this service can utilize when the whole system bandwidth is sufficient and there is System Remaining Bandwidth. We suggest calculating System Output Bandwidth first. Then, make sure the sum of Guaranteed Bandwidth for each service is not greater than System Output Bandwidth, or the setting may not work correctly.

Setting Formula

  • System Output Bandwidth = Total Guaranteed Bandwidth of all services + System Remaining Bandwidth
  • Guaranteed Bandwidth for each service ≤ Maximum Bandwidth for each service

Note:

If the outgoing packets do not match any router traffic control rules, the default behavior will be no limitation. You can add your own default router traffic control rule at the end of all rules by choosing All ports, and specify Guaranteed Bandwidth and Maximum Bandwidth.

To create a router traffic control rule:

  1. Select a network interface from the drop-down menu in the upper-right corner.
  2. Click Create.
  3. In the Ports section, select one of the following:
    • Choose All to apply the rule to all ports.
    • Choose Custom and click Custom. Enter up to 15 ports separated by commas or specify a port range to apply this rule to.
    • You can also specify the protocol.
  4. In the Source IP section, select one of the following:
    • Choose All to apply this rule to all IP addresses.
    • Choose Specific IP and click Select. You can specify an IP addresses or IP range to apply this rule to.

Now you can see the created router traffic control rule in the rule list.

To delete router traffic control rules, do either of the following:

  • Uncheck the checkbox of the rule in the Enabled column of the list.
  • Delete the router traffic control rule.

Note:

  • You can create up to 100 rules for each network interface.
  • Drag-and-drop to reorder the rules in the list.
  • Rules are prioritized according to their positions in the list.
  • The ports specified refer to the port numbers of Internet services outside the local network.
  • The source IPs refer to the IP addresses of the devices which use Synology NAS as the router.
