Navigate Desktop

DiskStation Manager (DSM) is a web-based operating system designed specifically for Synology products. With DSM, you quickly and easily accomplish the following on your Synology NAS:

  • Modify and personalize system settings
  • Install and open applications and packages
  • Create RAID volumes and manage other types of storage spaces
  • ...And much more!

Signing in to DSM

After setting up and installing DSM on your Synology NAS you can sign in using a browser on your computer.

Installing DSM

For step-by-step instructions to install DSM on your Synology NAS, please see the quick installation guide for your Synology product available at Synology website.

To sign in to DSM:

  1. Make sure your computer and Synology NAS are connected to the same local network.
  2. Open a browser on your computer and enter one of the following in the address bar:
    • find.synology.com (Only if your computer and Synology NAS are connected to the Internet)
    • The server name of your Synology NAS followed by :5000, for example diskstation:5000 or rackstation:5000 (The specific name depends on your settings made during initial setup)
    • The IP address of your Synology NAS followed by :5000, for example 192.168.48.14:5000 (The IP address depends on the settings made during initial setup)
  3. Enter your username and password and click Sign in.

Note:

The name, IP address, and admin password for your Synology NAS should have been set up during initial installation. If you have trouble finding this information, try installing Synology Assistant or go to find.synology.com.

DSM Desktop

After signing in, you'll see the DSM desktop. From here, you can start getting things done, like manage settings, use packages, or view notifications.

Taskbar

The taskbar is located at the top of the screen and includes the following items:

  1. Show Desktop: Minimize all open application and package windows.
  2. Main Menu: View and open applications and packages installed on your Synology NAS. You can also click and drag to create desktop shortcuts.
  3. Open applications: Displays currently open applications and packages. You can right-click and pin packages to the taskbar for faster access in the future.
  4. Upload Queue: Appears when you start uploading files to the Synology NAS. Click here to see more details, like progress and upload speed.
  5. External Devices: Appears when an external device (e.g. USB drive) is attached to your Synology NAS.
  6. Notifications: Displays notifications, like errors, status updates, and package installation notifications.
  7. Options: Shutdown, restart, logout, or modify personal account options.
  8. Search: Quickly find specific applications, packages, or DSM Help articles here.
  9. Widgets: Show or hide widgets.
  10. Pilot View: See a preview of all open application and package windows.

To create desktop shortcuts:

  1. Open Main Menu.
  2. Click and drag an application or package to the side.
