Creating Channels and Conversations
Channels and conversations are used for different purposes. A channel is intended for a group of people gathering together with a similar goal. A conversation is a private message system where you can chat with one person or a small group of people, and a bot conversation is a one-on-one conversation between you and the bot.
To enter, join, or create a channel:
- Click on the Add channel icon on the right side of CHANNELS to view all available channels.
- Select a channel you have previously joined or wish to enter. You can also preview any public channels you have not previously joined by clicking on the channel name. You can also search for a channel in the search box on the top right.
- If you are unable to locate a suitable channel, you can create a new one by clicking on Create on the top left.
- You can check the box next to Private Channel to make the channel only visible to members.
- A Channel Name is required and must be unique.
- The Purpose field is optional.
- You can select members to invite to your channel in the Invitations field.
Note:
- A Private Channel is visible only to channel members. Non-members can join only upon invitation.
- A Public Channel is visible to all members and anyone can join without an invitation.
To create a conversation:
- Click on the Add conversation icon on the right side of CONVERSATIONS to view all the members in Synology Chat.
- Here you can select a member or members to talk to by clicking on their names. You can also search for members or conversation groups by username or nickname in the search box on the upper-right corner.
- Click Chat on the bottom right to start the conversation.
Note:
- A conversation has a nine member limit, including the creator.
- If the member limit has been exceeded, you will be directed to create a channel.
To enter a 1-on-1 conversation with a deactivated user:
- Click on the Add conversation plus icon on the right side of CONVERSATIONS.
- Click the arrow icon beside Conversations to open the drop-down menu.
- Select Deactivated user to overview all conversations you had with the deactivated users.
- You can click on the name of a deactivated user to view your conversation with him/her. You can also search for deactivated users by username or nickname in the search bar on the upper-right corner.
Note:
- Operations are limited in the conversations with deactivated users.
- Group conversations that include deactivated users will be listed in the general conversation list instead of the deactivated user list.
To create a bot conversation:
- Click on the Add bot conversation icon on the right side of BOTS to view all the bots in Chat.
- Here you can click on a bot name to start a conversation with it, and can filter bots by entering their names into the search box on the upper-right corner.
Note:
- Bots cannot be added to a group conversation or channel.
- The message bar of a bot conversation will be disabled if the bot's outgoing URL is unset.
- A bot that is hidden from the bot list will appear on the list only when it actively starts a conversation with you.
