Failover Server

On the host server, you can manage failover servers in the Failover Server tab.

If the automatic failover is enabled, which you can set in the Failover Setting tab, when an unexptected error occurs, CMS will automatically choose a corresponding failover server to take over the surveillance services. The failover server will then operate with the same Surveillance Station configuration on the protected recording server.

After recording server comes back up, the surveillance services will go back automatically to the original Failback Settings.

You can add, delete, edit, enable, disable, and update the failover servers online or manually. You can also perform advanced operations, such as stopping restoration of recordings and snapshots taken during failover, as well as replacing original recording server. This tab contains two parts:

  • The right panel shows all failover server statuses. You can filter failover servers by selecting a status.
  • The upper left panel lists all failover servers of the selected status. Basic information of the servers is also displayed here.

To add a failover server:

  1. Click Add > Add Server.
  2. Select the Connection type of the failover server.
  3. According to your connection type, enter the IP address, hostname, port number, or QuickConnect ID of the failover server.1
  4. You can also click the magnifying glass button to search for the Synology products within the same local area network.2
  5. Enter the admin's password of the failover server.
  6. You can click Test Connection to see if the server has been set up properly.

Note:

  1. If you select Use IP address or FQDN as the connection type, the HTTPS protocol will be available for the connection to the failover server.
  2. When you use the Search feature, please notice the following information:
    • It only works when the connection type is Use IP address or FQDN.
    • If you select a Synology product of which the CMS mode is Failover Server, its IP address and port number will be filled in automatically.
    • If you wish to add a Synology product of which the CMS service has not yet been activated, you can click the Enable link and enter its admin's credentials to enable the CMS service.

To batch add failover servers:

  1. Click Add > Add Batch.
  2. From search results, select the servers which you want to add.
    • If you want to add a Synology server whose CMS mode is Failover Server, double-click this server or click the Edit button to enter the admin password and name the server.
    • If you want to add a Synology server that has not yet activated its CMS service, you can click the Enable link and enter its admin password to enable the CMS service. Tick advanced options such as security lock if necessary.
  3. In the Edit window, select Custom name if you want to customize a new name, or select Apply naming rule and choose from the Naming rule drop-down menu to set the default naming rule:
    • Default DiskStation name: The model names of Synology servers will be the display names of failover servers.
    • Model-No.: The names of the failover servers will be "[Model Name]-[Failover Sever Number]".
    • Prefix-No.: You need to specify the prefix of failover server names in the Custom Prefix field. The names of the failover servers will be "[Prefix]-[Failover Server Number]".
  4. When you are all done, click OK to add all the selected failover servers.

Note:

  • The name of a failover server is case sensitive and can contain 1 to 32 Unicode characters, excluding the following symbols: ~ ` ! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) - _ = + [ { ] } \ | ; : ' " < > / ?
The first character cannot be a minus sign or a space, and the last character cannot be a space.

All the installed licenses will be migrated to the new recording server.
  4. If you use another recording server in normal status to replace, the original recording server will be removed from the recording server list, the failover status of the failover server will stop. The recording server which is selected to replace will take the same Surveillance Station configuration of the original recording server to operate, and be renamed after the original recording server. All the licenses installed on the original recording server will be migrated to the new recording server, on which the originally installed ones will be overwritten.
  5. Click OK to complete the action.

To stop failing back with the recordings and snapshots taken during the failover:

When the recording server comes back up, CMS will automatically perform failback. The recordings and snapshots taken during the failover will be synced back to your recording server if you have enabled the related setting in the Failover Settings tab. If you wish to manually stop the restoration of recordings and snapshots, you can click Advanced > Stop Restoration.

Note:

  • The recordings and snapshots saved on the failover server will be removed after this operation.
