How do I sign in if I forgot the password for my administrator account?
Purpose
This article shows you how to reset your administrator account password by using the RESET button on your Synology NAS.
Resolution
- Locate the RESET button on your Synology NAS. To find the location of the RESET button on your device, please refer to your device's Hardware Installation Guide.1
- Use a paper clip to gently press and hold the RESET button until you hear a beep, and then release the button immediately.2 3
- The device and password are now reset. Refer to Note 1 in this article for the settings that are changed by this Mode 1 reset.
- Enter find.synology.com in the address bar of your web browser and find your Synology NAS on the Web Assistant page or find your Synology NAS through the Synology Assistant desktop utility.1
- Double-click on your Synology NAS. Enter the system’s default username, admin, and leave the password field blank.
- Click Sign In. Continue through the proceeding steps to finish resetting your password for your administrator account.
- For DSM 6.2.4 and above:
- Reset the password for your account and click Submit.
- If there is only one administrator account, the system will fill in the name admin in the username field automatically.
- If there are multiple administrator accounts, select one from the drop-down menu to change its password.
- Click Sign In Now and sign in to DSM using the password you have just created (For more detailed instructions, refer to this article).
- For DSM 6.2.3 and earlier:
- Create a strong password then log in to DSM with the username admin and the password you have just created.
- Go to Control Panel > User > the User tab and double click on the administrator account you want to use. Under the Info tab you can reset your password and click OK.
- Disable the admin account by first signing in with your administrator account, and then going to Control Panel > User > the User tab. Double click on admin and tick the Disable this account checkbox. Click OK (For more detailed instructions, refer to this article).
- For DSM 6.2.4 and above:
If the above method did not reset your administrator password, there are two possible reasons:
- Your browser has saved your old password. Try using a different browser or opening an InPrivate window (for Edge), an Incognito window (for Chrome), or a Private window (for Firefox and Safari) to sign in with the new password.
- The following option was enabled previously:
- For DSM 6.2.4 and above: The Keep admin password unchanged option is ticked at Control Panel > Update & Restore > System Reset.
- For DSM 6.2.3 and earlier: The Keep current admin password unchanged option is ticked at Control Panel > Update & Restore > Reset.

Notes:
- To get the Synology Assistant desktop utility:
- Go to Download Center.
- Click the Select product type drop-down menu and select NAS.
- Click the Select your Synology Product drop-down menu and select your Synology NAS model.
- Go to the OS version field and select DSM 7.0 Series or above.
- Go to the Desktop Utilities tab, find Synology Assistant, and click Download.
- Select the version for your computer’s operating system and click Download.
- If your Synology NAS does not beep when you press and hold the RESET button, this may be due to hardware failure. Please contact your local reseller for RMA service if your Synology NAS is still in warranty period.
- After resetting your Synology NAS, the LAN IP address may change. Refer to Step 4 above to confirm the IP address.
