Antivirus Essential

Antivirus Essential is a free and full-featured antivirus application which can be easily installed to safeguard your Synology NAS in the background. It checks for updates automatically and schedules the scan while your Synology NAS is not in use to maximize your Synology NAS's performance.

See the sections below to learn how to configure the following settings of your Antivirus Essential.

Before You Start

• Check your system memory to ensure a minimum capacity of 1 GB for successful scanning and optimal performance.

Overview

You can keep track of how your Synology NAS is doing and scan Synology NAS files by clicking Overview on the left panel.

To check the system status:

See the message and the big icon next to it. More details are revealed at the bottom of the window. The status could be any of the following:

• Ready to Scan: The scanning process is ready to start by clicking any of the onscreen buttons.
• Initializing Scan: Antivirus Essential is initializing the scanning process.
• Updating Virus Definitions: Antivirus Essential is installing the latest virus definitions.
• Scanning Now: The scanning process is in progress right now.
• Scan Completed: The scanning process is complete, and no viruses were found.
• Virus Processed: Viruses are found and have been quarantined.
• Danger Detected: Viruses are found but cannot be processed. Click Try again to try processing the infected files again.
• Reprocessing Now: (The status appears when you click Try again.) Antivirus Essential is reprocessing the detected viruses that were not processed during the previous scan.

To scan Synology NAS files, click any of the following buttons:

• System scan: Look for viruses that are most likely to be hidden in the system partition. System scan is especially useful when you are just checking on the health of your system without scanning files in your data volumes.
• Full scan: Scan all files on your Synology NAS to detects all possible threats. If something makes you think your Synology NAS is infected with a virus, we recommend a full scan.
• Custom scan: Scan the specified folders on your Synology NAS. If there are only a few folders that is likely to be infected with a virus, you can perform a custom scan.

Known restrictions for the ClamAV engine:

1. Files larger than 2048MB will not be scanned.
2. The probability of success for finding viruses hidden in archive files (such as ZIP, RAR, ARJ, Tar, Gzip, Bzip2) will be lower.
3. Remote Folders (CIFS) mounted in File Station will not be scanned during full scan.

Quarantine and Logs

When a virus is detected and processed by Antivirus Essential, it will be moved to the Quarantine section. You may also click Logs on the left panel to see more details.

To manage quarantined files, do any of the following:

• Select the files you want to manage, and then do any of the following:
  • Click Restore to restore the files to their original locations. You can tick the checkbox to add the files to the whitelist to skip scanning the restored files in the future.
  • Click Delete to permanently remove the selected files.
• Click Batch Edit to restore or delete all quarantined files.

To manage logs, do any of the following:

• Click Clear and choose any of the menu items to clear logs.
• Click Export to export your logs as a text file saved on your computer.
• Click Filter and tick or deselect the checkboxes to view matching logs only.

To skip scanning certain files:

Click Quarantine on the left panel, and follow the instructions here to add the selected files to the whitelist.

Settings

If you want to determine how Antivirus Essential handles detected threats or exclude or include certain files during scan, click Settings on the left panel.

To specify the default processing method when viruses are found:

Choose an option in the Default Processing Method section, and then click Apply.

To scan certain types of files only:

1. Tick Only scan specific file types, and click Extension list to add the file extensions to the list.
2. Click Close and Apply to finish.

To have the system automatically update virus definitions before starting each scanning process:

Tick Update virus definition before scanning, and then click Apply.

To scan modified files only:

Tick Enable Smart Scan and AntiVirus will compare the last scanning results and only scan files which had been modified.

Scheduled Scan

By default, Antivirus Essential runs a scan of your Synology NAS once a week when your Synology NAS is not in use (for example, 01:00 am on Saturday). If you want to adjust this, click the Scheduled Scan to reschedule your scans.

To create a scheduled scan:

1. Click Create and specify the type, date, and time of your scan.
2. Click OK and then click Save.

To enable or disable a schedule:

Tick or deselect the checkbox next to the schedule to enable or disable it.

To modify a schedule:

1. Select the schedule, click Edit and specify the date, time and type of your scan.
2. Click OK and then click Save.

To remove schedules:

1. Select the schedules and click Delete.
2. Click Save to apply the changes.

Update

To manage how Antivirus Essential perform updates, do any of the following:

• Click Update Now to perform updates right away.
• Click Manual Update to upload virus definition files from your computer. To successfully update the virus definitions, you need to upload all of the listed files (bytecode.cvd, daily.cvd, main.cvd).
• Click Settings on the left panel, and refer to To have the system automatically update virus definitions before starting each scanning process.
