The latest versions of DSM, SRM, or packages are available in the Download Center, but not on my device. Why does this happen?

Details

Your system determines which OS version and packages to show on your device based on several factors, including the rollout policy of Synology's software products and your system configurations. In this article, we list some common reasons why your device did not receive update notifications.

Resolution

The update is undergoing Staged Rollout

Applicable to: DSM, SRM, and all packages

Synology software updates are usually released in stages, also known as Staged Rollouts. We randomly assign devices into different stage groups and gradually make the update available to each group. This is why some users may see the new version on their device while others continue to see the previous version during the rollout. 1

Using the Staged Rollout method allows us to collect user feedback and assess the update version's viability before making it generally available. If there are any unexpected issues, we can pause or stop the rollout before it affects a larger crowd.

Our updates are usually made available to all regions within a few weeks of the initial release. However, if you want to try out the latest version right away, download and install the patch from the Download Center.

Your system does not need this update

Applicable to: DSM

Sometimes, the changes in an update are not relevant to your system. Since your system is already in its best shape, DSM's update mechanism will not notify you of such update.

This update mechanism is called "Smart Update". It detects whether your system would benefit from an update based on the services running on your system. If you do not receive an update in Control Panel > Update & Restore, the update may have been skipped by Smart Update. 23

Your system has not detected the update yet

Applicable to: DSM and SRM

Another reason that you did not receive update notifications may be that your system has not yet detected the update. In other words, the update is available to your device, but your system is not aware of it yet. Follow the instructions to configure how often your system checks for updates.

  • For DSM: Go to Control Panel > Update & Restore > Update Settings, and configure a desired Check schedule.
  • For SRM: Go to Control Panel > System > Update Settings, and configure a desired schedule.

The update is not a generally available version

For DSM and SRM

I. Preview/Beta Versions

Synology announces Preview and Beta versions through the official websites and community forum. Your system will not notify you if such version is available.

You can sign up for our newsletter to get the latest news on any upcoming Preview or Beta programs. Sign in to your Synology Account, click on the icon at the upper-right corner, go to Manage Profile > Preference > Newsletter.

II. Release Candidate (RC)

A Release Candidate (RC) is the last phase of software development life cycle before the official release. It is only available in the Download Center and will be removed once the official version is released. Your system will not notify you if such version is available.

For DSM Packages

If you want to be notified of beta packages available to your device, follow these instructions to change the settings in your DSM Package Center.

  • For DSM 7.x: Go to Package Center > Settings > General > Beta packages, and tick Yes, I want to see beta versions!
  • For DSM 6.x: Go to Package Center > Settings > Beta, and tick Yes, I want to see beta versions!

The update is not pushed to your system

Applicable to: DSM

Specific NAS models will not receive the update notification. Refer to DSM release notes for detailed information related to your NAS model. If you want to manually update DSM, follow these instructions.

Notes:

  1. If you are using CMS and Active Insight, you may see update notification in the services. This is only to notify you that Synology has released an update. Whether your NAS detects the update still depends on the Staged Rollout policy.
  2. If your system configurations are later changed, you may receive a notification for an update and its subsequent updates in Control Panel. All updates are cumulative and include fixes in previous updates.
  3. Smart Update cannot be turned off.
