Active Backup for Business Agent (DSM)
With Active Backup for Business Agent (DSM), you can back up your entire Synology NAS, including configuration settings, packages, and user data, to a remote Synology NAS that has Active Backup for Business installed.
Before you start
- This package is available on specific models only. Refer to this link, select the model you use, and click Package to check whether Active Backup for Business Agent (DSM) is supported on it.
- Active Backup for Business must be installed on the remote Synology NAS where you want to store your backups.
- The backed-up data can only be restored on the same model or its successor.
Backing up your Synology NAS
Go to Package Center and install Active Backup for Business Agent (DSM). Active Backup for Business Agent will back up your Synology NAS to the connected backup destination.
To connect to a backup destination:
- Launch Active Backup for Business Agent (DSM) and click Start.
- Enter the following information of the remote Synology NAS where you want to store your backup data:
- Server address: Enter the IP address or the domain name of the remote Synology NAS.
- Username and Password: Enter the credentials of the remote Synology NAS.
- Click Connect.
- Restart DSM to apply the backup settings.
Note:
- The backup task settings are pre-configured in Active Backup for Business > Settings > Template. To change the settings of the backup task, go to Active Backup for Business > Synology NAS on the backup destination.
- If you ever uninstall the package, make sure to restart DSM to ensure that all of the backup tasks are completely stopped.
Overview
In this section, the current backup status and the last and next backup times are displayed.
Displayed status:

Completed:
This icon indicates that the previous backup task was completed. TheLast backup timeandNext backup time, if scheduled, will be displayed underneath the status for reference. |

Backing up:
This icon indicates that the task is backing up. The transfer status will be displayed in real-time underneath the status. |

No backups:
This icon indicates that the device has not run any backup task yet. Next backup time, if scheduled, will be displayed underneath the status for reference. |

Canceled:
This icon indicates that the backup task was canceled. If applicable,Last backup timewill record the time of the device's last successful backup beneath the status. Next backup time, if scheduled, will be displayed underneath the status for reference. |

Partial success:
This icon indicates that the backup task was only partially successful. Detailed warning information can be found at Active Backup for Business > Activities > Task history. |

Error:
This icon indicates that one or more errors occurred, which could include failed internet connection. A brief error message and a suggested solution will be displayed next to the icon. More detailed information can be found at Active Backup for Business > Activities > Task history. |
To restore individual files/folders:
- Click Restore > File/folder.
- Click Yes to open Active Backup for Business Portal.
- Enter the username and password of your backup destination.
- Restore the file or folder from Active Backup for Business Portal.
To restore the entire DSM system:
- Click Restore > System. You will be redirected to Control Panel.
- Click Restore System.
- Follow the wizard to finish restoring your system.
Backup Destination Information
This section shows the IP address of and account used to connect to the backup destination.
To change the backup destination:
- Click Edit Connection.
- Modify the IP address to the IP address of the new backup destination. All logs and the current backup status will remain.
To switch the account used to connect to the backup destination:
- Click Sign out.
- Click Yes to confirm. All logs will be removed from Active Backup for Business Agent (DSM) and only the current backup status will remain.
- Follow the instructions in the To connect to a backup destination section to sign in with another account.
Log
In this section, the last 5 events in Active Backup for Business Agent (DSM) are shown. For more logs, click and you will be redirected to Log Center.
Note:
- All logs will be removed once you click Sign Out in Active Backup for Business Agent (DSM).
