Managing Photos and Videos
On the Synology Moments homepage, you can switch between the Photos, Albums and For You tabs to browse photos and videos in different modes.
Upload Photos and Videos
When uploading photos or videos to Synology Moments via the web interface or mobile devices, the uploaded items will be respectively uploaded to the folder named Web or Mobile under the folder home/Drive/Moments. Photos can be added through the following ways:
To upload using Synology Drive Server:
You can upload photos and videos to Synology Drive Server by adding them to My Drive/Moments, and view them in Synology Moments.
To upload using Synology Moments:
You can upload photos and videos to Synology Moments by doing either of the following:
- Click the Add icon on the upper right corner of the homepage and select Upload to upload photos and videos.
- Drag and drop files and folders to Synology Moments from your local desktop.
Note: The function is only supported on Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge and cannot be used in the automatically created albums named Shared, People, Subjects, Places, Tags, Videos, and Recently Added.
To backup using Synology Moments:
With iOS/Android Moments, you can upload photos and videos through automatic/manual photo backups or uploads from iOS/Android devices. Please download Moments on your mobile devices and refer to the Help articles for iOS/Android Moments if needed.
To upload using file sharing protocols:
Every user can upload photos and videos to home/Drive/Moments in File Station or from other file sharing protocols.
To upload from desktop:
Download Synology Drive Server utility in Download Center and configure one-way upload or two-way sync to upload or synchronize your photos and videos.
Note:
- When a duplicated file is uploaded, you can choose Skip or Rename by going to Settings > General.
- Once the folder name Moments is renamed in Synology Drive Server or other file protocols, all the photos and videos will not be accessible from Synology Moments. Re-indexing is required if the folder name is renamed back to Synology Moments.
- The supported image formats are as follows: BMP, GIF, HEIC, JPEG, PNG, RAW (arw, srf, sr2, dcr, k25, kdc, cr2, crw, nef, mrw, ptx, pef, raf, raw, 3fr, erf, mef, mos, orf, rw2, dng), TIFF
- The supported video formats for playback are as follows: 3G2, 3GP, ASF, AVI, DAT, DivX, FLV, M4V, MOV, MP4, MPEG, MPG, MTS, M2TS, M2T, QT, WMV, XviD
Browse Photos and Videos
Click the Photos tab in the homepage to browse all your photos and videos.
To display all the photos and videos in My Drive:
Click the Account icon > Settings > General and tick the checkbox Display all the photos and videos stored in My Drive of Synology Drive.
Note:
- Only the photos in My Drive will be displayed, while those in Team Folder will not be displayed.
To switch the viewing mode:
Go to the drop-down menu on the upper right corner in the Photos tab to switch between the following viewing modes:
- Timeline View: All the photos and videos are displayed by the date created.
- Hover your mouse over the scrollbar at the right to view the time indicator and jump to specific time period.
- The location information of a photo is shown when GPS coordinates are available, and is displayed in descending order according to the location where the most number of photos were taken on the same day.
- Folder View: All the photos and videos are displayed following the folder hierarchy in My Drive of Synology Drive Server.
Note:
- You can go to Settings > General > Display > Timeline view mode > View by month to adjust the display mode and view photos in smaller display size.
To enable Shared Photo Library:
Shared Photo Library allows admins and users with permissions to collaboratively manage the photos and albums from other sources. Go the Enable Shared Photo Library section in Share and Search to learn how to allow other account users to access photos and videos from another source.
To view and edit lightbox information:
- Click the Details icon to expand the information panel.
- View or edit the following lightbox information. Please note that only date, description, and tags can be edited and saved to metadata.
- Date: The date when a photo was taken, or the date when a photo was modified if the photo taken date is unknown.
- Filename and basic information: Includes filename, resolution, and file size.
- GPS coordinates and map: Location information is displayed when GPS coordinates are available.
- Basic EXIF information: Includes camera, aperture, ISO, and lens.
- People: The faces in photos identified by the system. Click a certain person to go to his/her album.
- Tags: Tags can be added as the keywords of a photo. Photos with the same tags will be grouped together and displayed in Albums > Tags.
Note:
- In Synology Moments, the geographic information in the timeline or detailed information come from a reverse geocoding of the coordinates via the open source database OpenStreetMap®, with data provided by © OpenStreetMap contributors. To disable reverse geocoding, please go to Settings and disable the Places album.
- You can go to Settings > General > Display > Map source to change the displayed map source when a photo is viewed in full screen.
To view basic information when browsing in full screen:
You can check the date, location, and description of your photos or videos when they are in slideshow mode. To disable this feature, click Settings > General and untick the option Display time, location, and description when viewing photos in full-screen.
To view Live Photos:
- Click on the Live Photo you want to view.
- Click the Live Photo icon above to start playing.
To view 360 degree photos and videos:
Enter the keyword 360 degree into the search bar, and click the suggested results to view all the 360 degree photos and videos.
Note:
- A file will only be marked as 360 degree if the photo's EXIF or the video's metadata contains all the following 360 degree formats: (ProjectionType="equirectangular"), (FullPanoWidthPixels=CroppedAreaImageWidthPixels), and (FullPanoHeightPixels=CroppedAreaImageHeightPixels).
- A file will not be marked as 360 degree if the photo's EXIF or the video's metadata contains contains the following 360 format: (UsePanoramaViewer="false").
Edit Photos and Videos
To edit a photo:
- Click on the photo you want to edit.
- Click Edit (
) to enter edit mode:
- Enable Auto Color to allow Moments AI to automatically adjust your photo’s color. You can click to see the difference between the original photo and the new photo.
- Click and allow the Auto Rotate function. Moments AI can automatically rotate your photo into the right angle. You can click to see the difference between the original photo and the new one.
- Rotate function allows you to make a Right 90° or Left 90° rotation of your photo.
Note:
- After you apply Auto Color on your photos,
will show on the upper right corner of the photos when viewed in full screen.
- After you apply Auto Color or make a 90° rotation, Live Photos will be saved as still photos. To turn them back to Live Photos, undo both changes in edit mode.
- Auto Color’s effects include automatical adjustments on the brightness, contrast, saturation, white balance, tint, highlight, shadow, and skin tone of a photo.
- Auto Color and Auto Rotate are supported on certain models. Find out which models support these features in our FAQ article.
To edit the date and time of photos and videos in batch:
- Select the photos and videos you want to edit.
- Click the More icon and select Edit date and time to adjust the date and time.
- Select Shift date and time or Set a single date and time and then go to the Modified time section to set the new date and time.
- Click OK to apply the changes. The edited date and time will be updated to the original files.
To edit photo and video tags in batch:
- Select the photos and videos you want to edit.
- Click the More icon and select Edit tags.
- Remove or add tags according to your needs, and then click OK to apply the changes. The edited date and time will be updated to the original files.
To add photos or videos to an album:
- Select your photos and videos and click the Add to album icon on the upper right corner of the action bar.
- Add the selected photos and videos to an existing album or a new album. Album name can be edited when a new album is added.
To share photos and videos:
- Select the items you want to share and click the Share icon on the action bar to edit privacy settings and shared users.
- Click Done to share the items with others. The selected photos and videos will be grouped into the newly created virtual albums, and can be accessed with a shared link.
To play slideshow:
To start the slideshow, click a photo or video and click the More icon on the upper right corner and select Slideshow.
To re-index photos and videos:
- Click the Account icon > Settings > General.
- Select a re-index option.
- Click the Re-index button to start indexing all the previously indexed folders again.
