Cloud Sync

With Cloud Sync, you can seamlessly sync and share files among your Synology NAS and multiple public cloud services. Refer to the specifications for the supported cloud services.

Create New Connections

To sync files among your Synology NAS and public cloud services, you need to create connections on Cloud Sync to link to the service provider by entering your user credentials.

  1. Click on + Create in the upper-left corner.
  2. Choose your public cloud service to sync files with.
  3. Once your public cloud account is authenticated, configure the local and remote paths you want to sync, along with sync direction, data encryption, schedule, file exclusion, and other settings according to your needs.
  4. If you enable data encryption, please note that:
    • Once you have enabled encryption, you cannot disable it or change its password.
    • Each public cloud account has only one encryption key.
    • Once encryption has been enabled, Cloud Sync will create a folder named @SynologyCloudSync on the public cloud. Please do not change the files within that folder.

Note:

  • For best syncing results, refer to details in working with different cloud services.
  • One public cloud account can only create one connection with Cloud Sync.
  • Cloud Sync on DSM cannot instantly sync the file changes made on containers; likewise, Cloud Sync on containers cannot instantly sync the file changes made on DSM.
  • When Enable advanced consistency check is selected, Cloud Sync compares file hashes, along with file size and last modified time, between the public cloud and Synology NAS to ensure sync accuracy. This enhanced integrity check requires more time and system resources, and depends on the public cloud's support for advanced attributes.

Default action for conflicted file

If modifying the same file at the same time

If a file or directory is modified on both your local Synology NAS and remote public cloud account at the same time, Cloud Sync will try to keep the local changes as much as possible, and the remote changes will be saved as one revision if the cloud service supports versioning.

If syncing files with the same names

When Cloud Sync encounters two files with the same name on public cloud storage (e.g., Google Drive), it syncs both files and adds "(1)" to the end of one filename.

Manage Connections

Select the connection on the left panel you want to edit. Click the Manage button to pause, resume, authenticate, or unlink to end the connection between your Synology NAS and the public cloud.

Edit schedule

Go to the Schedule tab and click Enable schedule settings. Sync tasks will pause during suspend mode.

Edit general settings and traffic control

Go to the Settings tab to configure the following:

  • Connection name
  • Polling period: Polling period refers to how often Cloud Sync polls for changes on the public cloud and syncs the changes to the local folder. If you set your polling period to one hour, Cloud Sync will connect to the public cloud and search for file changes every hour. The maximum polling period is one day (86,400 seconds).
  • Traffic control: If the traffic control value is 0, it means there is no limit to the rate of file transfer. The traffic control applies to all tasks of the public cloud connection and is shared by all file transfers at the same time.

Edit advanced settings

To set up part size

Go to the Settings tab > Advanced settings > specify a size of the upload/download part and apply the settings. This feature is only available for Synology C2 Object Storage, S3 Storage, Alibaba Cloud OSS, OpenStack Swift, Backblaze B2, hicloud S3, Tencent Cloud COS, and JD Cloud OSS.

To set up server side encryption

Go to the Settings tab > Advanced settings > select Enable server side encryption (AES-256) and apply the settings. This feature is only available for S3 Storage, Alibaba Cloud OSS, and hicloud S3.

To download files with NFD characters in their names

Select a connection on the left panel > Settings > enable Download files with NFD characters in their names. This allows you to download files with NFD characters in their names, such as Latin, Slavic, and Asian languages that use accented or combined letters, as well as text on Apple devices, from public clouds. After download, the NFD characters will automatically convert to NFC characters on Synology NAS.

Please note that this feature is only available for Dropbox, Dropbox Team Space, Google Drive, Google Shared Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, Microsoft OneDrive for Business, and Microsoft SharePoint Online.

Manage Sync Task List

Once connected to public cloud services, you can manage sync tasks for each connection.

Add, delete, and edit tasks

Select a connection in the left panel > Task List to view, add, delete, or edit tasks. You can also modify the sync direction and file filter rules for each task.

Note:

  • The folder for the new sync task must be a different directory from the existing tasks or connections.
  • If you want to create a task using the same path, Cloud Sync will compare existing files and only sync the changes that have been made.

Edit sync priority

Select a connection in the left panel > Task List > Edit > Settings to adjust sync priorities (high, medium, or low) for tasks based on how frequently they need to be completed.

Settings for Administrators

If you are an administrator, you can click Settings (the gear icon) in the upper-left corner to set up database location, number of files for concurrent uploads/downloads, maximum records in history log, and more.

Cloud Sync may affect Synology NAS hibernation

Refer to this article to learn more about how to prevent Cloud Sync from affecting Synology NAS hibernation.

Backup and Restore

You can back up Cloud Sync and restore it to a previous version via Hyper Backup.

Back up Cloud Sync

  1. After downloading Hyper Backup from Package Center, go to Hyper Backup > Create > Folders and Packages to create a backup task.
  2. Follow the wizard and select Cloud Sync for application backup.
  3. After the backup task is complete, all current tasks and settings will be backed up.

Restore Cloud Sync
