What can I do if a drive is in "Warning," "Critical," or other abnormal statuses?

Purpose

This article aims to help you understand the meaning of each drive status and provides guidance on what to do if the status is abnormal.

Environment

  • DSM 6.2 to 7.1.1

Resolution

A drive is likely defective and needs replacement if it has entered Warning, Critical, or any other abnormal statuses.

Inspecting a drive

  1. Go to Storage Manager > HDD/SSD.
  2. Select a drive from the list of drives.
  3. Do either of the following:
    • Click the drop-down icon drop-down icon to expand the information displayed.
    • Click Health Info > Overview to view relevant statistics.

Drive or health statuses

The drive or health status indicates the condition of the drive.

Status

Definition

Healthy

The drive is in good condition, or the drive warning has been suppressed or disabled.

Warning

The system has detected issues or an increase in bad sectors on the drive. Even if the drive appears to be working fine, continue to monitor the drive's health and bad sector count.

Critical

The system has detected one or more critical issues on the drive. To ensure continued reliability, consider replacing the drive and repairing the storage pool (DSM 7 or DSM 6.2).

Failing

The system has detected severe issues on the drive. Drive integrity may not be guaranteed. To ensure continued reliability, consider replacing the drive and repairing the storage pool (DSM 7 or DSM 6.2).

Access Error

The system has detected severe issues on the drive. Drive communication errors may have caused the drive to disconnect from the system, or these errors have resulted in severe read-write failure. To ensure continued reliability, consider replacing the drive and repairing the storage pool (DSM 7 or DSM 6.2).

Allocation statuses

The allocation status indicates how the drive has been assigned or whether it has DSM installed.

Not Initialized

DSM is not installed on the drive. The drive can be assigned to a storage pool.

Initialized

DSM is installed on the drive. The drive can be assigned to a storage pool.

Normal

DSM is installed on the drive. The drive is assigned to a storage pool.

Hot Spare

The drive is assigned as a hot spare drive. For more information, refer to the help articles for DSM 7 and DSM 6.2.

Detected1

The system has detected storage pool data on the drive. The drive has not been assigned to a storage pool.

System Partition Failed2

The system cannot access the partitions of the drive. To troubleshoot this issue, please refer to this article.

Crashed2

The system has removed the drive from its storage pool. Please replace the drive with a healthy one and then repair the storage pool (DSM 7 or DSM 6.2). If the drive was accidentally removed, put the drive back and repair the storage pool.

Deactivated2

The drive is deactivated.
