Synology Hyper Backup Explorer

Synology Hyper Backup Explorer is a compact desktop tool that helps you quickly browse and copy different versions of backup data for immediate use.

Hyper Backup Explorer works on Windows, Mac, Ubuntu, and Fedora platforms. Before using this desktop application, install the Hyper Backup package on your Synology product; afterward, download Hyper Backup Explorer from Synology Download Center and install it on your client computer.

Note:

  • Hyper Backup Explorer can only be used to find backup data but not backup LUNs.

To browse backup files on local disk:

  1. Go to the Download Center > your model > Desktop Utilities to download the desktop tool on the computer.
  2. Open Hyper Backup Explorer, and click Browse Local Backup; afterward, please find the SynologyHyperBackup.bkpi in your backup target and open it.
  3. To open files from Hyper Backup on DSM 6.1 or above, perform the following actions according to the operating system of your computer:
    • Right-click the .hbk file and open it directly via Hyper Backup Explorer on your Mac OS.
    • Right-click the SynologyHyperBackup.bkpi or drag and drop it to Hyper Backup Explorer to open it on your Windows OS.
  4. To switch between backup versions, perform either action:
    • Click the calendar icon on the bottom-left corner, and click on the date marked in red (available with backup versions).
    • Click the right or left arrow to switch between versions.
  5. To find another backup target, click Browse another backup task and continue.

To retrieve backup files from local disk:

You can retrieve backup files in either way depending on the local platform:

  • All platforms: Right-click the folder/file and click Copy to to save it to the destination.
  • Windows/Mac: Drag and drop the folder/file to the destination.

Note:

  • The path of backup location or copy destination cannot exceed 32767 characters (Windows) or 4095 characters (Mac, Ubuntu and Fedora) in length.
  • You cannot browse a backup target that is currently receiving backup data.
  • You can copy only files or folders inside a shared folder.
  • Copying symbolic links to Windows computers is not supported.

To filter folders/files:

You can set up search criteria to filter folders/files contained in the current view.

  1. Click the magnifying glass icon on the top right corner, and specify the criteria: Keyword, Type, Size (KB), and Date Range
  2. Click Search to filter the folders/files that match your criteria in the current view.

Note:

  • You cannot filter shared folders in the backup target; only the contained files and subfolders can be filtered.
  • Folders/files within an encrypted backup target cannot be filtered.

To browse backup files on Synology C2 Storage:

  1. Open Hyper Backup Explorer, and click Browse Backup in Synology C2 Storage.
  2. Enter your Synology C2 account to log in.
  3. Select the backup task which you would like to browse the files from
  4. To find another backup task, click Browse another backup task and continue
  5. To check the account information, please click on the account info icon. To switch to another Synology C2 account, please click on Logout and you will be redirected to the login screen.

To retrieve backup files from Synology C2 Storage:

    You can retrieve backup files in either way:
  • Right-click the folder/file and click Copy to and save it to the destination.
  • Drag and drop the folder/file to the destination.
