Host

The host feature is designed to provide better data security and usability. A host represents your VMware ESXi, Windows, or other servers that access your LUNs. Setting the properties of each host and managing their LUN access permissions can help minimize the possibility of data corruption caused by non-cluster-aware file systems accessing the same LUNs. Once you create a host, you can:

  • Create an alias representing one or more initiators (Initiators are represented by the IQN/WWPN of your VMware ESXi, Windows, or other servers)
  • Manage the hosts' access permissions to LUNs

Note:

  • If you have customized LUN permissions, you must add initiators to a host and update the permission settings on the Host page.
  • For more information on managing LUN permissions with hosts, read this article.

To add a host:

  1. Click Add.
  2. Enter the host's information: Name, Description, Operating System, and Protocol. Select the initiators (by their IQN or WWPN) you want to include in the host and click Next. If the initiators you are looking for are not on the list, enter their IQN/WWPN to add them to the list.
  3. Select the LUNs to which the host will have access. Click Next.
  4. Set the host's permissions to LUNs. Click Next.
  5. Click Done to finish the wizard.

To edit a host:

  1. Select a host and click Edit.
  2. Configure the settings depending on your needs:
    • General: Change the name, description, or operating system of the host.
    • Initiator: Click Add if you want to add initiators to the host. Select initiators from the list or add them manually if they are not listed. ClickOK. Select an initiator and click Remove to remove it from the host.
    • Permission: Change the permissions to the LUNs between Read/Write, Read Only, and No Access. If a LUN's permissions were Allow all, changing the permissions to either Read Only or No Access will prevent other hosts from accessing the LUN.
  3. Click Save to apply the settings.

To remove a host:

  1. Select a host and click Remove.
  2. Confirm the delete message and click Delete.

Note:

  • When a LUN's permissions are set as Allow all, all hosts and initiators have read/write permission to it by default.
  • Hosts running different operating systems cannot have either read or read/write permission to the same LUN at a time. For hosts that run the same operating system, refer to the table below:
    Operating System Concurrent LUN Access
    VMware ESXi Yes
    Windows No
    Windows (failover cluster) Yes
    Linux No
    macOS No
    Citrix Hypervisor No
    Others Yes
