Back up and Restore

You can back up and restore system configurations, mailboxes, and emails of Synology MailPlus Server.

Backing up System Configurations

With Hyper Backup, you can back up system configurations to a Synology NAS compatible with Synology MailPlus Server.

  1. Launch Hyper Backup on the source Synology NAS.
  2. Click + in the bottom-left corner to create a data backup task.
  3. Select either type of backup destination:
    • Local folder & USB: System configurations will be backed up to the local Synology NAS or an attached USB/SD storage device.
    • Remote NAS device: System configurations will be backed up to a remote Synology NAS, where Hyper Backup Vault runs.
  4. Specify the remaining settings (see instructions here) to finish the task setup.
  5. When prompted to select an application to back up, choose Synology MailPlus Server.
  6. When the task is complete, configurations in the following pages will be backed up:
    • Domain
    • Mail Delivery
    • Service
    • Security
    • Auditing
    • License
    • Account

Syncing Mailboxes and Emails

With Shared Folder Sync, you can sync all mailboxes and emails to a Synology NAS compatible with Synology MailPlus Server.

  1. Go to Control Panel > Shared Folder Sync on the source Synology NAS.
  2. Create a folder-sync task for the "MailPlus" shared folder (see instructions here).
  3. When the sync is complete, you will have all the mailboxes and emails on the destination Synology NAS.

Note:

  • Do not use Cloud Station Server, Cloud Sync, or Synology Drive for the backup. The sync feature might cause data corruption.
  • If the "MailPlus" shared folder exists on the destination Synology NAS, the backed-up folder will be automatically renamed to "MailPlus_1":
    • To use data in "MailPlus_1": Manually move them to the "MailPlus" shared folder.
    • To avoid account errors: Connect the destination Synology NAS to the directory server (e.g., LDAP server or Windows AD domain) used by the source.

Restoring System Configurations, Mailboxes, and Emails

With Hyper Backup, you can restore MailPlus data stored on a remote Synology NAS.

  1. Before you start, perform the following on the Synology NAS to be restored:
    • Stop Synology MailPlus Server and Synology MailPlus at Package Center.
    • Rename the "MailPlus" shared folder to avoid errors that could be caused by naming conflict.
  2. Go to the Synology NAS that stores the backed-up system configurations, mailboxes, and emails.
  3. Launch Hyper Backup.
  4. Restore the backed-up configurations (see instructions here).
  5. When the restoration is complete, the current MailPlus configurations will be overwritten.
  6. The backed-up mailboxes and emails are readily available without a restoration.

Migrating License Keys

To transfer email services from one Synology NAS to another, you need to migrate license keys after replicating configuration files and email data.

  1. Launch Synology MailPlus Server on the Synology NAS you wish to run email services.
  2. Go to the License page to enter the license keys.
  3. Once migrated, the license keys on the source Synology NAS will automatically become invalid.

Note:

  • The backup and restoration feature is supported on Synology MailPlus Server 1.0-164 and above that runs on DSM 6.0 or above.
