Set up a Synology SSL VPN connection
Synology SSL VPN is a VPN service that supports SSL/TLS authentication and encryption. It offers fast and secure VPN access to web pages, files, and applications on the Internet or local networks.

To set up your connection on a Windows PC or a Mac:
- Open a web browser and go to the VPN Plus Web portal URL provided to you by your administrator.
- Download and install Synology SSL VPN Client to your local computer.
- Set up a PIN code.
Click Connect to connect via Synology SSL VPN.
Set up an OpenVPN connection
OpenVPN is an open-source VPN software that creates secure connections over the Internet using a custom security protocol.
To set up your connection on a Mac:
- Download Tunnelblick, an OpenVPN client for macOS.
- Follow the instructions to edit and install the openvpn.ovpn configuration file into Tunnelblick.
To connect, click the Tunnelblick icon and choose Connect VPNConfig. Enter your SRM user credentials and click OK to establish a connection.
To set up your connection on a Windows PC:
- Download and install the client application from OpenVPN. Launch the OpenVPN GUI as an administrator.
- Follow the instructions to edit and import the openvpn.ovpn files into the OpenVPN to set up as a profile.
To connect, right-click on the OpenVPN icon from the system tray and click Connect. Enter your SRM user credentials to establish a connection.
Set up an L2TP connection
L2TP (Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol) is a popular tunneling protocol often used in the corporate sector to support VPNs.
To set up your connection on a Mac:
The following instructions are for macOS 10.15.7.
- Go to Apple menu > System Preference > Network.
- Create a new connection.
- Select Show VPN status in menu bar, then click Apply.
To connect, click on the VPN status icon and select Connect.

To set up your connection on Windows PC:
The following instructions are for Windows 10.
- Create and configure your Windows registry.
- Go to Windows Settings > Network & Internet > VPN and click Add a VPN connection.
- Fill in the required information and click Save.
To connect, click on the VPN profile you just created.

Access client desktops remotely
Remote Desktop allows you to easily access and control client desktops on the Synology Router network from anywhere with Internet access, without the need for client software.
The Windows or Mac desktop computer you want to remotely access must have the remote desktop feature available.
