Upgrade and Compatibility

This section will explain the compatibility and requirements. Please read the information below carefully before upgrading your hosts.

To upgrade DSM on your hosts:

When you upgrade DSM on your hosts, different DSM versions might coexist in the virtualization cluster until all hosts have been upgraded. There are two types of upgrade:

  • Non-disruptive: When a single host is upgraded, all the others in the cluster remain unaffected.
  • Incompatible: All virtual machines in the cluster should be shut down one by one and cannot be restarted until all hosts have been upgraded to the same DSM version.

Note:

  • For a non-disruptive upgrade, once one host has been upgraded, the status of all the others will be changed to Update available.
  • For an incompatible upgrade, once one host has been upgraded, the status of all the others will be changed Update required. If there are multiple hosts in the cluster, please upgrade one at a time.
  • To perform an incompatible upgrade, you need to make sure the status of the cluster is healthy.
  • If the package is stopped after upgrading the host, please upgrade the package.

To upgrade the Virtual Machine Manager package on your hosts:

When you upgrade the Virtual Machine Manager package on your hosts, different package versions might coexist in the virtualization cluster until all hosts have been upgraded. There are three types of upgrade:

  • Non-disruptive: When the Virtual Machine Manager package is upgraded, the virtual machines running on the host will not be disrupted. All the other hosts in the cluster remain unaffected.
  • VM-disruptive: When the Virtual Machine Manager package is upgraded, the virtual machines running on the host should be shut down. All the other hosts in the cluster remain unaffected.
  • Incompatible: All virtual machines running remotely in the cluster should be shut down and cannot be restarted until the Virtual Machine Manager packages on all hosts have been upgraded to the same version.

Note:

  • For a non-disruptive upgrade, once one host has been upgraded, the status of all the others will be changed to Package update available.
  • For an incompatible upgrade, once one host has been upgraded, the status of all the others will be changed to Package update required. If there are multiple hosts in the cluster, please upgrade one at a time.
  • To perform an incompatible upgrade, you need to make sure the status of the cluster is healthy.

To upgrade Virtual DSM on your virtual machines:

Log in to Virtual DSM of the desired virtual machine, and perform a system upgrade at Control Panel > Update & Restore.

Note:

  • When you upgrade Virtual DSM but your host DSM or Virtual Machine Manager version is too old, you will get a notification to upgrade your host DSM or Virtual Machine Manager before upgrading Virtual DSM.
