DS cloud (iOS)

Version 2.11

Note: Synology Cloud Station Suite is not supported on DSM 7.0 and above. It is succeeded by a new application, Synology Drive Server. DS cloud is only supported by Synology Drive Server versions below 3.0. We recommend switching to Synology Drive mobile app for enhanced compatibility with Synology Drive Server.

DS cloud is the mobile counterpart to Cloud Station Server for your iOS device. Choose the folders on your DiskStation which you want to sync to your mobile device to have available for offline viewing anywhere you go. DS cloud also gives you total control over the sync criteria: for each folder, you can set the maximum file size as well as the type of files you wish to sync.

Before You Start

Before syncing files with DS cloud, please log into DSM to install and set up Cloud Station Server.

To install Cloud Station Server:

  1. Log into DSM with an account belonging to the administrators group.
  2. Go to Package Center to find and install Cloud Station Server.

Getting Started

If you're using DS cloud for the first time, you can follow these instructions to link DS cloud with Cloud Station Server and start syncing folders.

To link DS cloud with Cloud Station Server:

  1. Enter the following information on the DS cloud login page:
    • Device name: (optional) enter your device name (e.g. iPod touch).
    • Address or QuickConnect ID: Enter the IP address, DDNS hostname, or QuickConnect ID of your Synology NAS.
    • Account and Password: Enter your DSM account login credentials.
  2. Tap Link.

Note:

If you cannot link DS cloud to Cloud Station Server with your user credentials, you can try logging into DSM with an account belonging to the administrators group and going to Cloud Station Server > Privileges to enable your account.

To select folders to be synced:

Once DS cloud and Cloud Station Server are successfully linked, you can follow these steps to select which folders to sync.

  1. Select the folders that you want to sync on the Shared folders page. You can navigate between levels of folders by tapping the arrows to the right of the folder and the Back button. Moving to a different level will deselect the currently selected folders.
  2. Tap Next to confirm.
  3. On the Options page, you can modify the following settings to control what files are synced to your device:
    • Maximum file size: Only files smaller than the value specified here will be synced. This function allows you to avoid consuming all the storage of your device with larger files. The maximum file size can be set from 1 MB to 10 GB.
    • Formats: Specify what groups of file formats you want to be synced, such as videos, images, or documents. To sync all file formats, please select all groups. You can specify the following groups: images, audio, video, documents, and others. See below for more details.
    • Sync subfolders: Enabling this option allows folders within folders to be synced.
  4. Click Done to finish and start syncing the selected folders!

File Format Groups

DS cloud supports opening the file formats below. When modifying folder sync options, you can also choose which groups of file formats you want to sync to your device.

  • Image Formats: .jpg, .jpeg, .gif, .bmp, .png, .tiff
  • Audio Formats: .mp3, .m4a, .aa, .aiff, .aifc, .aif, .wav, .m4b, .m4p, .m4r, .3gp
  • Video Formats: .mp4, .m4v, .mov
  • Document Formats: .doc, .docx, .ppt, .pptx, .xls, .xlsx, .pdf, .txt, .pages, .pages.zip, .numbers, .numbers.zip, .key, .key.zip, .htm, .html
  • Other Formats: File formats not specified above.

Navigating

Below is a general introduction to DS cloud:

  1. Tap this to add another folder or Synology NAS to sync
  2. Adjust sync settings of the folder
  3. Displays local folders and files
  4. Recent changes: files added or deleted
  5. Recently opened files
  6. Adjust your settings or unlink your device from your Synology NAS

Add and Manage Synced Folders

Once setup is complete, you can add more synced folders or manage existing ones by going to the Cloud Station Server tab. For better flexibility, DS cloud allows you to choose multiple folders on multiple Synology NAS devices at the same time, such as some work-related folders on your Cloud Station Server at work, and others on your personal Cloud Station Server at home.

The status of each synced folder is displayed as follows:

  • : The folder is currently being synced.
  • : Syncing was unsuccessful because the file is larger than the maximum file size or is not one of the file formats you chose to sync.
  • : An error occurred, so the file or folder was not synced. You can get more information by going to the file or folder information page.
  • Normal: If the file has no specific status icon, it has been successfully synced and is available on both your mobile device and Cloud Station Server.

To add a folder to be synced:

  1. Tap on the Cloud Station Server tab.
  2. Select an existing Synology NAS connection, or tap Link to add a new connection and log in with your DSM user credentials.
  3. Select folders to be synced.
  4. Tap Done to confirm.
  5. Modify syncing options (see above for details).

To stop syncing and remove a folder:

  • For an individual folder:
    1. On the Cloud Station Server tab, find the folder that you wish to remove and tap the next to it.
    2. Tap Stop syncing on the Options page. This action will remove files within the synced folder from your mobile device.
  • For multiple folders:
  • On the Cloud Station Server tab, tap Edit to delete multiple folders in one go. Note that these files will be simultaneously deleted from both your mobile and Synology NAS devices.

Note:

  • If there are problems syncing a specific folder, you can go to the Settings page and tap Status under your desired connection to unlink it.
  • If you cannot see a particular folder when you are selecting folders to sync, check this folder's permissions on DSM. If it is a read only folder, it will not appear on DS cloud.

To monitor your syncing progress:

Under the Recent changes tab, you can view and monitor the current status of your syncing tasks:

  • The files currently being synced.
  • The syncing progress.
  • The syncing speed.
  • Note:

    • If there is no syncing task in progress or the syncing has been completed, you will not see any syncing status here besides the list of recently modified files.

Browse and Manage Files

DS cloud allows you to browse and manage (move, copy, open, delete, etc.) files and folders synced with Cloud Station Server. There are three places where you can browse files: the Cloud Station Server tab, which displays a list of all folders synced with Cloud Station Server; the Recent changes tab, which displays files that have been moved, copied or updated recently; and the Recently opened tab, which gives you quick access to all files you have recently viewed.

To open a file, do any of the following:

  • Simply tap it.
  • Tap the to the right of the file, and then choose Open or choose Open With... if you want to open the file with another app.

Modify Settings

The Settings tab displays the following information and options:

  • Connection status: This section shows details regarding your account, device name, and IP address or QuickConnect ID of the Synology NAS with which DS cloud is syncing.
  • Sync on Wi-Fi only: Enable this option to only sync files when your device is connected to a wireless network (and avoid getting any surprising, nasty bills from your network carrier).
  • SSL encryption: enable this option to secure the data transmission both when browsing and syncing files with DS cloud. Encryption requires more bandwidth and may result in slightly slower performances.
  • Geofences: iOS apps cannot perform background tasks more than a specific amount of time (3 to 10 minutes). To circumvent this limitation, you can use geofences to define specific areas where DS cloud will sync even when in the background. Tap Geofence > Create to add geofences.

To unlink DS cloud from Cloud Station Server:

On the Settings tab, tap Unlink at the top-right corner of the page.

Note:

  • If you leave DS cloud without unlinking, your connection information will be saved for the next time you launch DS cloud.
  • If you unlink DS cloud, all files synced on the mobile device will be deleted. This will apply to all your Synology NAS connections.
