Perform File System Defragmentation

The number of fragmented files will increase in the file system if data are modified constantly, resulting in slow access performance of files on the drives. Performing file system defragmentation can improve the file access performance.

Before you start:

Before you proceed with file system defragmentation, please note the following:

  • File system defragmentation can only be performed on volumes in the Btrfs file system. Your Synology NAS model must support Btrfs file system first to support file system defragmentation. Check the product datasheet of your Synology NAS to see if it supports Btrfs.
  • File system defragmentation can only be performed when the volume status is Healthy. If the status is not Healthy, the function will be automatically disabled.
  • Do not shut down the system before file system defragmentation completes; otherwise, file system defragmentation must be restarted.
  • Volume usage may increase if the volume contains snapshots of shared folders.

To perform file system defragmentation:

  1. Go to the Storage page and select a Btrfs volume that you want to perform file system defragmentation.
  2. Click the upper-right icon and select File System Defragmentation.
  3. Read the message and click Yes.
Note: The status of the volume will change to Performing file system defragmentation during the process, and will change back to Healthy when the action completes.
