How do I reset my Synology Unified Controller?

Purpose

This article explains the scenarios for each reset option in your Synology Unified Controller and the steps to take.

Mode 1: Reset administrator login credentials and network settings to default

  • Use this mode if you have forgotten your password, want to move your Synology Unified Controller to another network environment, or need to assign a new IP address.1

Mode 2: Reset Synology Unified Controller and re-install DSM UC

  • Use this mode if you want to re-install DSM UC.2

Notes:

  1. To simply change the administrator password, go to Options > Personal > Account to do so without resetting the Synology Unified Controller.
  2. Resetting the Synology Unified Controller does not impact its data. However, we strongly recommend going to Control Panel > Update & Restore > Configuration Backup to back up data and system configurations before the reset.

Check that the status of your Synology Unified Controller is Ready via either of the following tools:

Mode 1: Reset administrator login credentials and network settings to default1

  1. Locate the RESET button on your Synology Unified Controller.2
  2. Press and hold down the RESET button for about 4 seconds until you hear a beep. Release the button immediately.
  3. Launch Web Assistant. Double-click on your Synology Unified Controller. On the login page, enter the system default username admin, leave the password field blank, and click Sign In.
  4. Create a strong password for your account and click Submit.
  5. Sign in to DSM UC using admin and the password you have just created.
    • If you have other administrator accounts, sign in using admin and the new password first before resetting the password for the other administrator account.

Mode 2: Reset Synology Unified Controller and re-install DSM UC

This mode wipes out all system configurations and carries out all the reset functions included in Mode 1. Executing this mode causes service interruptions.

  1. Locate the RESET button on your Synology Unified Controller.2
  2. Press and hold down the RESET button for about 4 seconds until you hear a beep. Release the button immediately.
  3. Press and hold down the RESET button again for 4 seconds until you hear 3 more beeps.
  4. Wait for about 2 minutes until the LED indicators behaves in the following ways:
    • The POWER LED on the front panel turns static blue.
    • The POWER and STATUS LED lights turn static green.
    Your Synology Unified Controller has been successfully reset and the system configurations have been wiped.3
  5. Enter find.synology.com in the search bar of your web browser or use Synology Assistant to locate your Synology Unified Controller. The status of your Synology Unified Controller should be Ready.
  6. Click Connect to start the wizard for the re-installation process.4

Notes:

  1. Once your Synology Unified Controller is reset via Mode 1, the following settings take place:
    • The admin account is restored to default.
    • UI management port is reset to 5000/5001.
    • IP, DNS, gateway, and other net interfaces are reset to DHCP.
    • Auto Block is disabled.
  2. Refer to the Product Manual if you need assistance locating the RESET button. Pressing the button on each controller will reset both controllers.
  3. If your current DSM UC version ends with "Update" and a number (e.g., DSM UC 3.0.2 Update 1), Mode 2 resets the OS to the latest version without the "Update" (e.g., DSM UC 3.0.2).
  4. You can go to Control Panel > Update & Restore > DSM UC Update > Manual DSM UC Update to manually install the latest version of DSM UC.
