Proxy Deployment
You can deploy Proxy Server in your network by enabling Web Proxy Auto-Discovery (WPAD) for use with DHCP servers or for when your Synology NAS operates in wireless router mode. WPAD is a protocol that allows client devices in the local network to automatically configure proxy settings. Users will not have to manually configure their browser proxy settings.
To enable WPAD:
- Check Enable Web Proxy Automatic Discovery.
- In Network interface, select the network interface you want Proxy Server to operate on. A wpad.dat configuration file will automatically be generated in the web shared folder. A DHCP configuration file for Synology DHCP Server will also be created.
- Click Apply to save your settings.
- Next, if you have enabled DHCP server on your own router, please disable it. The next few steps will show you how to enable DHCP server on your Synology NAS.
- Go to Control Panel > Network Interface. Select the network interface you chose above and click Edit.
- Go to DHCP Server and check Enable DHCP server. Then check Enable Web Proxy Automatic Discovery. You should see the filepath for your wpad.dat configuration file automatically appear in URL.
- Click OK to save your settings.
Note:
- To use your own wpad.dat configuration file, please name the file as "wpad_custom.dat". Then save it to the web shared folder (\web in File Station) and restart Proxy Server.
Proxy Server can also operate as a transparent proxy, forcing all client devices which connect to the Internet via your Synology NAS in wireless router mode to relay Internet browsing traffic through Proxy Server.
