Resolution
You can enable the resolution service to allow Synology NAS to resolve recursive queries. A recursive query occurs when Synology NAS is not authoritative for a requested domain. In this case, Synology NAS queries other domain name servers until the information is found, or until the query fails.
For example, if a client sends a query for the IP address of "synology.com" to your Synology NAS, which is not authoritative for this domain (i.e., you do not own "synology.com"), the Synology NAS will query other DNS servers or forward the query to specified DNS forwarders, and then relaying the result back to the client.
Note:
- If you only need your Synology NAS to perform authoritative server functions, we recommend keeping the resolution service disabled to save system resources.
- When you need to enable DNS Server and a hot spot at the same time, please make sure the resolution service of DNS Server is activated so that hot spot clients can implement domain name resolution normally. If Limit source IP service is enabled, please confirm the IP address range for hot spot clients is included in the Source IP List.
To enable resolution services:
- Tick Enable resolution service.
- Edit the following settings:
- Limit source IP service: If this option is enabled, only hosts or subnets included on the Source IP List are allowed to make recursive queries through Synology NAS.
- Source IP List: Click here to specify which hosts or subnets are allowed to make recursive queries through Synology NAS.
- Enable forwarders: This option allows Synology NAS to redirect recursive queries to forwarder servers, such as public DNS resolvers. Enabling forwarders can improve resolution time and save system resources.
- Forwarders: Enter the IP addresses of forwarders into the Forwarder 1 and Forwarder 2 fields.
- Forward policy: Select a policy for forwarding queries. If you select Forward first, your Synology NAS queries root servers when forwarders do not respond. If you select Forward only, your Synology NAS will not attempt to query its root servers even if forwarders do not respond.
- Click Apply to save the settings.
