Assemble an Available Storage Pool

In the past, your Synology Unified Controller must be rebooted if you want to assemble a storage pool previously created on another device. To save the hassle of system reboot, Synology developed Online Assemble -- a mechanism for assembling and converting a storage pool back to available status without rebooting your system. Once the drives previously installed in another device have been switched to your current Synology Unified Controller, the system will detect the drives and scan the relevant data (e.g., RAID type and SSD cache), checking whether the drives installed in the current device meet the criteria for assembling the storage pool previously created on another device.

Online Assemble can be performed on a storage pool that was previously created on another device and is now available on the current device. If SED drives or drives have been unlocked and installed in your Synology Unified Controller, the Available Pool information will be triggered and appear in the Storage Pool tab on both controllers when certain criteria are met, allowing you to choose which controller should the storage pool be assembled on. Please note that the Available Pool information will NOT appear if the installed drives are in any of the following conditions:

  • The number of drives used for RAID configuration is smaller than the minimum number of required drives. For example, a RAID 5 storage pool that is created by four drives and tolerable of one drive failure will not be detected when less than three drives are installed in Synology Unified Controller.
  • The number of RAID under the RAID Group is insufficient. For example, only two RAIDs are detected in a RAID Group configured by three RAIDs.
  • One or multiple SSD read-write caches are missing due to an insufficient number of installed drives. For example, if Volume 1 and Volume 2 of a storage pool are respectively created by SSD read-write cache and read-only cache, the Available Pool information will not appear when SSD read-write cache is missing.

Note:

  • If the SAS cables are not connected properly to your Synology Unified Controller, then no Available Pool information will appear even if a sufficient number of drives are installed in your Synology Unified Controller.
  • Even if you did not click the Online Assemble button to assemble the Available Pool, the available storage pool will still be automatically assembled after the system reboots.

To assemble an available storage pool:

If the Available Pool information appears in the Storage Pool tab, please follow the steps below to assemble the available storage pool:

  1. Go to the Storage Pool tab, click on Available Pool, and then click the Online Assemble button.
  2. In the pop-up window, choose which controller you want the storage pool to be assembled on. Click Next.
  3. Confirm the settings and click Apply.
  4. Once the assembling is successful, the name Available Pool will automatically change to Storage Pool, while the storage pool information remains the same.

Note:

  • If the assembling fails, the status of the Available Pool will change to Assemble failed and the Online Assemble button will not be clickable. If this situation occurs, we recommend rebooting your system to assemble the storage pool.

To remove an available storage pool:

  1. Go to the Storage Pool tab and click the Available Pool you want to remove. Click Remove.
  2. Read the message carefully and click Remove.
  3. Confirm that you want to remove the storage pool and click Yes.

Note:

  • All data on the drives will be deleted if the Available Pool is removed. Please make sure you have backed up important data before proceeding.
