Antivirus by McAfee

Antivirus by McAfee is a complete antivirus application which safeguards your Synology NAS. It checks for updates automatically and lets you schedule virus scans when your Synology NAS is not being used in order to consume less system resources.

Overview

This page displays the overall health of your system and provides options to perform virus scans.

System Health

The following status messages are displayed along the top of the page:

  • Ready to Scan: The virus scan is ready to start.
  • Updating Virus Definitions: The latest virus definitions are being downloaded and installed.
  • Scanning Now: The virus scan is currently underway. The number of infected files is displayed below.
  • Scan Completed: The virus scan is complete, and no viruses were found.
  • Virus Found: Infected files were discovered on your system. Check the status message below for details.
  • Danger Detected: Viruses were found but cannot be processed. Click Try again to try processing the infected files again.
  • Reprocessing Now: (This status appears when you click Try again) The system is reprocessing the detected viruses.
  • License Error: The system cannot authenticate your license. Check your Internet connection and then try updating your settings on the Update page.
  • License Expired: Your license has expired. It must be renewed to continue using the package.
  • Synology Account Error: An error occurred when attempting to obtain your account information from Synology Account. Check your Synology Account settings.
  • System Time Unsynchronized: The time settings of your system and Synology Account do not match. To modify your time settings, go to Control Panel > Regional Options.
  • Update Virus Definitions: Your virus definitions might be corrupt. Update them as soon as possible.

To perform a virus scan:

Click any of the following buttons:

  • Full scan: Scans all files on your Synology NAS. If you suspect your Synology NAS is infected with a virus, we recommend performing a full scan.
  • Custom scan: Scans specified folders on your Synology NAS. If only a few folders might be infected, you can perform a custom scan to save time.
  • System scan: Scans the system partition of your Synology NAS. This option is useful when you just want to check the health of your system without scanning files.

Upgrading or Renewing your License

The overview page displays the status of your Antivirus by McAfee license. You can click Upgrade or Renew to purchase a full license or renew an existing one.

Quarantine

When a virus is detected and processed, it appears in the Quarantine section.

To manage quarantined files:

Select the files you want to manage, and then do any of the following:

  • Click Restore to restore each file to its original locations. You can tick the checkbox to add files to the whitelist and skip scanning the restored files in the future.
  • Click Delete to permanently remove the selected files.

Or you can click Batch Edit to restore or delete all quarantined files.

Logs

This page displays information and activity related to virus scans, updates, and license, etc.

To manage logs, do any of the following:

  • Click Clear to clear all or selected logs.
  • Click Export to download logs as a text file.
  • Click Filter and tick or deselect the checkboxes to view matching logs only.

Settings

This page provides options to specify what files are scanned or how to manage detected viruses.

Default Processing Method

You can choose how to process infected files when they are discovered.

To modify the default processing method when viruses are found:

  1. Choose an option in the Default Processing Method section.
  2. Click Apply.

Default Scanning Target

You can limit what files are scanned according to folder or file extension.

To modify the whitelist:

Folders specified on the whitelist are excluded from virus scans.

  1. Click Whitelist.
  2. Click Create to add folders to the whitelist.

To scan specific files extensions:

  1. Tick Only scan specific file types, and click Extension list to add the file extensions to the list.
  2. Click Close and Apply to finish.

To scan modified files only:

Tick Enable Smart Scan and AntiVirus will compare the last scanning results and only scan files which had been modified.

To have the system automatically update virus definitions before starting each scanning process:

Tick Update virus definition before scanning, and then click Apply.

Scheduled Scan

By default, Antivirus by McAfee scans your Synology NAS once a week. You can also specify when to perform scans on this page.

To set up scheduled scans:

  1. Click Create and specify the type, date, and time of your scan.
  2. Click OK.

To enable or disable a scheduled scans:

Tick or deselect the checkbox next to the schedule to enable or disable it.

To modify a scheduled scans:

  1. Select the schedule, click Edit and specify the date, time, and type of your scan.
  2. Click OK.

To remove scheduled scans:

  1. Select the schedules and click Delete.
  2. Click Save to apply the changes.

Update

This page displays information related to virus definitions. You can manually update virus definitions by clicking Update Now.

Note:

  • The time required to update virus definitions varies depending on your Internet connection.
  • Increasing virus definitions from regular updates may slow down scanning speeds. To manage this, schedule scans during low-activity periods.
