Settings

This article explains the general settings for Active Backup for Business.

Settings

To limit network traffic:

You can control the total network consumption of PC and physical server backup tasks so that they don't take up all the available DSM network bandwidth. Active Backup for Business dynamically distributes the bandwidth limit you set to ongoing backup tasks.

  1. Go to the Settings tab.
  2. Check throttle PC and physical server backup tasks' network traffic to and specify the traffic limit. The bandwidth will be shared by all computers and physical server backup tasks.
    • You can limit the bandwidth consumption of devices within a specific range of IP range. Tick Apply traffic throttling only to devices within the following IP range and enter the IP range.

Note:

  • If you have configured bandwidth consumption limit for PC backup tasks, the tasks' actual transfer speed will still depend on traffic throttling.

To configure the maximum number of concurrently backed up device:

You can specify the maximum number of devices you wish to back up at the same time. Please note that concurrently backed up devices can be run up to the maximum number you set only when the RAM usage limit for your Synology NAS is not exceeded.

  1. Go to the Settings tab.
  2. Under the Concurrent Devices section, select the maximum number of devices you wish to back up at the same time.

Note:

  • Active Backup for Business 2.2.0 (and above) supports concurrently backing up 10 file servers. For personal computers, physical servers, and virtual machines, the maximum number for concurrent backups can be up to 50. The actual number varies by RAM capacity:
    • Less than 8 GB: 10
    • Between 8 GB and 31 GB: 30
    • 32 GB and more: 50

To configure the retention policy execution time:

You can customize the execution time of the retention policy to avoid the peak hour and prevent performance issues.

  1. Go to the Settings tab.
  2. Under the Retention Policy Execution Time section, specify the time when you wish to execute the retention policy.

Delegation

DSM administrators can delegate operation privileges to non-admin users, allowing them to back up, restore, or delete data. They can also make non-admin users package managers; this can help enhance management efficiency.

To delegate privileges to one or more users:

  1. On the Delegation tab, click Create.
  2. Select one or more users from the Users drop-down list. Search for users by entering keywords, and tick the checkboxes to select.

Template

Configuring backup settings of a template can help apply the same backup settings to multiple devices in mass deployment. To avoid the gap between deployment and protection, a default template set to protect personal computers and Linux physical servers will be listed and cannot be removed. When creating a template, you can decide the backup type, backup schedules, compression, encryption settings, and the version retention policy. You can always edit the default template or create new templates.

To create a backup task template for personal computers and physical servers:

  1. Go to the Template tab.
  2. Click Create and follow the wizard to create a template.

To edit an existing backup task template:

  1. Go to the Template tab.
  2. Select a template you wish to modify.
  3. Click Edit to change the task settings.

Note:

  • The restore privilege of a personal computer backup template is not configurable. Only the users belonging to the administrators group and the signed-in account owners can access the backup versions of devices from Active Backup for Business Portal or restore the device with the recovery media.
