How do I set up a UPS to protect a high-availability cluster from power anomalies?

Purpose

In the event of a power failure, to lower power consumption and prevent data loss, an uninterruptible power system (UPS) triggers the active and passive servers to enter Standby Mode (or Safe Mode before DSM 7.0), where all services are stopped and all volumes are unmounted. Both servers will resume normal operation when power is restored.

This article guides you through setting up an UPS for your high-availability cluster.

Notes:

  • This article does not apply to Synology dual controller NAS and Unified Controller models.
  • Synology High Availability only supports SNMP UPS devices before DSM 7.0.

Resolution

After DSM 7.0

  1. Connect the active and passive servers (Synology NAS) to the battery backup outlets of one or two UPS devices.1 If you are using a USB UPS, connect the UPS device and your servers with a USB cable.
    • With one UPS device: Setting up UPS on either the active or passive server can protect both servers, as long as they are both powered by the UPS.
    • With two UPS devices: The active and passive servers can use different UPS types.
  2. On your Synology NAS, go to Control Panel > Hardware & Power > UPS to select Enable UPS support and edit UPS settings for both servers:
    • Specify the setting of Time before Synology NAS enters Standby Mode.
    • Select Enable network UPS server if you are using this Synology NAS as a Synology UPS server.3.png
  3. Click Apply to save the settings, and the servers with UPS devices are operating as follows:
Active Server

Power Failure
No UPS
Passive Server

Before DSM 7.0

  1. Connect the active and passive servers (Synology NAS) to the battery backup outlets of a SNMP UPS device.1
  2. On your Synology NAS, go to Control Panel > Hardware & Power > UPS to select Enable UPS support and choose SNMP UPS for Network UPS type.
  3. Select Time before Synology NAS enters Safe Mode if you want to specify when this server should enter Safe Mode upon power failure.
  4. Enter the community string in the SNMP community field.
  5. Select Enable network UPS server if you are using this Synology NAS as a Synology UPS server.
  6. Click Apply to save the settings.4.png

Notes:

  1. Instead of battery backup, some UPS outlets are used for surge suppression. Please refer to the user's manual of your UPS device to check hardware information.
