How do I restore individual backup files or folders from a Hyper Backup backup file (.hbk)?

When you create multi-version backup tasks in Hyper Backup, data saved at the destination will be stored in a .hbk format file.1 With the file, you can easily restore your backup data. This file format is exclusive to Synology services. It can only be operated with Hyper Backup, Hyper Backup Explorer, and Hyper Backup Vault.

This article introduces some methods for browsing and restoring individual backup folders and files saved in .hbk file format.

Via Hyper Backup on the source Synology NAS

Follow the steps below to browse or restore individual backup files or folders on the Synology NAS where the backup task is located.

  1. Launch Hyper Backup.
  2. From the left panel, select the backup task that contains the files you wish to browse.
  3. Click 1.png to view the details.
  4. You can restore the files with the following options:2
    • Copy to …: Copy the backup file to a local path of the source Synology NAS.
    • Restore: Restore the backup file to the original path. This option will overwrite the original file.
    • Download: Download the backup file to your PC.

Via Hyper Backup Vault on the destination Synology NAS

Follow the steps below to browse or restore individual backup files or folders on the destination Synology NAS when your backup task is a remote NAS device task.

  1. Go to Hyper Backup Vault > All Task.
  2. Hover your mouse over the task that contains the files you wish to browse.
  3. Click 2.png to view the backup versions of the task.
  4. Hover your mouse over the version that contains the files you wish to browse.
  5. Click 3.png to view the details.
  6. You can retrieve the files with the following options:2
    • Copy to …: Copy the backup file to a local path of the source Synology NAS.
    • Download: Download the backup file to your PC.

Via File Station

  1. Go to File Station.
  2. Find the backup file (.hbk) you wish to browse.
  3. Right-click on the backup file (.hbk)
  4. Select Open Backup Explorer3 to view the detail of the backup.
  5. You can retrieve the files with the following options:2
    • Copy to …: Copy the backup file to a local path of the source Synology NAS.
    • Download: Download the backup file to your PC.

Via Synology Hyper Backup Explorer on client devices

Hyper Backup Explorer is a desktop tool that runs on client computers. You can download this tool from Download Center. This tool helps you browse and retrieve backup files stored in proprietary repositories created by Hyper Backup. Notes:

  1. You can only browse the backup data from the backup destination when you select Local folder & USB (single-version) or rsync copy (single-version) as the backup destination.
  2. When you select Copy to … or Download, the copied or downloaded file will no longer have its original permission settings.
  3. To view files in Backup Explorer on your Synology NAS, you need to install either Hyper Backup or Hyper Backup Vault first.
