I can't sign in to Synology NAS (DSM) with Adaptive MFA enabled. What can I do?

Symptoms

You have Adaptive Multi-Factor Authentication (Adaptive MFA) enabled and cannot verify your identity when signing in to DSM.

Diagnosis

You are not able to sign in to DSM due to any of the following reasons:

  • You lost or changed your mobile phone and cannot receive authentication requests from Adaptive MFA.
  • You have not set up a backup email to receive the verification code to sign in to DSM.

This article provides a workaround if you are unable to sign in to DSM when Adaptive MFA is enabled, or steps to temporarily disable Adaptive MFA.

Resolution

To sign in to DSM using a workaround

You can use either of the following methods to prevent triggering Adaptive MFA:

  • Sign in from a device that you have previously used to sign in to DSM.
  • Sign in to DSM from your LAN (Local Area Network).

To disable Adaptive MFA

If your Synology NAS has multiple administrators
