Instant Restore to Hyper-V
With Instant Restore, you can quickly restart your virtual machine directly from a compressed and duplicated backup file to minimize downtime. Keep in mind that the process may differ when restoring a virtual machine to a different hypervisor.
Before You Start
Consider the following details before instantly restoring your virtual machines:
- Full virtual machine restore takes longer but maintains complete I/O performance, while Instant Restore restarts your virtual machine within seconds but provides limited I/O performance.
- All changes made during Instant Restore will be automatically saved on your Synology NAS. Make sure there's enough storage space available.
- Instant Restore to Hyper-V is unavailable if compression, encryption, or data checksum for advanced data integrity is enabled at the backup destinations. This only affects Synology models with the following package arches: Avoton, Braswell, Bromolow, Cedarview, and Grantley.
- Make sure the hypervisor has permission to access and mount the iSCSI target on the Synology NAS. During Instant Restore, a backup image is cloned to a temporary iSCSI target on the Synology NAS, and the hypervisor will then mount it from there.
- iSCSI Initiator Service on the source server must be enabled to perform Instant Restore.
- If the virtual machine is backed up in a saved state, only partial configurations (e.g., virtual machine name, CPU, memory, disk controller, and network adapter) will be retained after restoration. All other settings will reset to their default values.
Restore to the original location
- Choose either of the following methods to launch the Restore Wizard:
- Go to Active Backup for Business > Virtual Machine, select the virtual machine to restore and click Restore.
- Go to Active Backup for Business > Virtual Machine > Task List, select the backup task to restore and click Restore.
- Select a restore point.
- Select Restore to Microsoft Hyper-V.1
- Select Instant Restore.
- Select Restore to the original location.
- Click Done. You'll be redirected to Restore Status to monitor the progress.
- Once restoration is complete, you can migrate an instantly restored Hyper-V virtual machine.
Restore to a new location
- Choose either of the following methods to launch the Restore Wizard:
- Go to Active Backup for Business > Virtual Machine, select the virtual machine to restore and click Restore.
- Go to Active Backup for Business > Virtual Machine > Task List, select the backup task to restore and click Restore.
- Select a restore point.
- Select the hypervisor to instantly restore to.
- Select Instant Restore.
- Select Restore to a new location, or with different settings.
- Name your new virtual machine, and select a folder and network.
- Click Done. You'll be redirected to Restore Status to monitor the progress.
- Once restoration is complete, you can migrate an instantly restored Hyper-V virtual machine.
Note:
- If you want to start the virtual machine immediately after the restoration completes, select Power on VM automatically after restoration. If you're using the virtual machine for testing purposes only, we suggest not to choose this option. Instead, you can manually disconnect the original virtual machine from the production network to avoid conflicts.
- When instantly restoring to Hyper-V with compression or encryption enabled at the backup destination, you can restore only 64 virtual disks at a time.
- During restoration, CPU and memory are automatically allocated due to system resource constraints. You can modify these settings after the restoration is complete.
- To start a virtual machine after restoring it from a saved state, disable Secure Boot.
