What is an immutable snapshot? How do I use it?

Details

Immutable snapshot is a WORM (Write Once, Read Many)-based technology that restricts any changes and deletions of your data within a specified period of time. In addition, shared folders, LUNs, volumes, or storage pools that contain immutable snapshots cannot be deleted. Therefore, this feature ensures protection against tampering and accidental operations to your data.

This article guides you through creating immutable snapshots.

Environment

Resolution

Create immutable snapshots on a remote server

  1. Go to Snapshot Replication > Replication > Shared Folder or LUN.
  2. Click Create and launch the Create Replication Task wizard.
  3. In the Set Replication Schedule page, select Immutable snapshots and set Protection period.1
  4. Confirm your settings and click Done to create a replication task.

Create immutable snapshots on a local server

  1. Go to Snapshot Replication > Snapshots > Shared Folder or LUN.
  2. Select a shared folder or LUN and click Settings. You can press and hold Ctrl/ or Shift to select multiple items.
  3. In the Schedule tab, select Enable snapshot schedule, and configure the settings.
  4. Select Immutable snapshots and set Protection period.1
  5. Click OK to save your settings.
  6. You will see a confirmation message. Click OK to finish.

Make a specific snapshot immutable

  1. Go to Snapshot Replication > Snapshots > Shared Folder or LUN.
  2. Select a shared folder or LUN and click Snapshot > Snapshot List.
  3. Select a snapshot and click Edit.
  4. Select Immutable snapshots and set Protection period.1 Once selected, this option cannot be changed until the system automatically removes the selection when the protection period ends.
  5. Click OK to save your settings.

Check the remaining protection period of an immutable snapshot

  1. Go to Snapshot Replication > Snapshots > Shared Folder or LUN.
  2. Select a shared folder or LUN that contains immutable snapshots.
  3. Click Snapshot > Snapshot List.
  4. Hover over the 1.png shield icon or select a snapshot and click Edit to check the remaining protection period.

Notes:

  1. We recommend setting the protection period between 7 and 14 days.
