Backup and Restore

There are two ways to back up and restore your data in LDAP Server:

  • Back up and restore LDAP database: LDAP Server allows you to back up and restore your LDAP database regularly for management or archival purposes.
  • Back up and restore the LDAP Server package: With Hyper Backup, you can back up the LDAP Server package and restore it later. This is especially useful when you want to move an existing package to a different Synology NAS.

Back up and Restore LDAP Database

You can back up your LDAP database regularly and then restore the backup file.

To configure backup:

  1. Go to LDAP Server > Backup and Restore and click Configure.
  2. Select a destination to save the backup file.
  3. Tick Enable schedule backup, and then specify a backup schedule to enable automatic backup. If the option is left unchecked, you can still perform immediate backup later.
  4. Specify the maximum number of backup versions.
  5. Click Apply. LDAP Server will start backing up the LDAP database to backup files according to your schedule.

Note:

  1. If backup versions exceed the specified number, the earliest backup file will be removed.
  2. When the backup process is running, LDAP Server will stop LDAP service briefly until the process is complete. Therefore, it is recommended that the backup schedule is set to run the process when fewer people are using LDAP service (for example, 4:00 A.M.).

To perform immediate backup:

  1. Click Back up Now.
  2. Click OK. When the process is finished, you will see a backup file with the prefix "synoldap" in the DirectoryServerBackup folder of the destination shared folder.

To restore a backup file:

  1. Select the backup file located on your Synology NAS or computer.
  2. Click Restore.

Note:

The restoration process will permanently remove all data and configurations in the current LDAP database. Proceed with caution.

Back up and Restore LDAP Server

DSM's Hyper Backup allows you to back up the LDAP Server package, and restore it to another Synology NAS.

To back up LDAP Server:

  1. Go to DSM > Hyper Backup > Create > Data backup task to create a backup task.
  2. Follow the Backup Wizard, and choose LDAP Server when you are prompted to select applications to back up.
  3. After the backup task is complete, the following LDAP Server data will be backed up:
    • LDAP Server settings
    • FQDN
    • Password
    • User and group data

To restore LDAP Server:

  1. Go to DSM > Hyper Backup > Restore > Data to restore the desired backup task.
  2. After the restore task is complete, the current settings and data of LDAP Server will be overwritten.

Note:

  • The package cannot be restored to Synology products running older versions of DSM.
  • The package cannot be restored to a previous package version.
