Storage
In the Storage tab, you can add, delete, and edit recording storages, as well as view all corresponding cameras of each recording storage.
To add a recording storage:
- Click Add > Add Storage.
- Choose Use an existing folder or Add shared folder, and click Next.
- If you selected Use an existing folder:
- If your Synology NAS/NVR is the host server in a CMS architecture, please select a server from the Source drop-down menu.
- From the Shared Folder drop-down menu, select a DSM shared folder as the new recording storage.
- If you selected Add share folder:
- Enter the Name and Description for the new recording storage in the Information page.
- If your Synology NAS/NVR is the host server in a CMS architecture, please select a server from the Source drop-down menu.
- From the Location drop-down menu, select a volume where the new recording storage will be located.
- If you wish to configure the maximum storage size of the recording space, tick the Limit the recording storage up to checkbox and specify the maximum size limit (in gigabytes) for the shared folder. When the specified maximum size limit is reached, cameras with recording storage set up in this folder will remove older recordings or stop recording depending on the archive rotation settings configured in IP Camera > Edit Camera > Recording Settings > Advanced.
- If you wish to keep the shared folder used as the recording storage from appearing under "Network" in Windows File Explorer, tick the Hide this shared folder in "My Network Places" checkbox.
- Click Next to go to the Advanced page.
- If you would like to encrypt the shared folder, you can do the following:
- Specify and confirm a new encryption key. The encryption key cannot include commas (,), or equal signs (=).
- To view or access an unmounted shared folder, you will need to mount the folder manually by importing or entering the encryption key.
Note:
- The name of a file or a folder within an encrypted shared folder cannot exceed 143 English characters or 47 Asian (CJK) characters; if you access your shared folders with Mac OS, the name of a file or a folder within an encrypted shared folder cannot exceed 130 English characters or 43 Asian (CJK) characters.
- Encrypted shared folders cannot be accessed via NFS.
- If passwords are restored to default using the reset button located on the DiskStation, encrypted shared folders will be unmounted, and the option to automatically mount encrypted shared folders will be disabled.
- Click Finish to complete the creation of recording storage.
Note:
- Once you use this feature, your Surveillance Station will be granted the Read/Write permission of the selected shared folders. You can go to the edit page of such shared folders in DSM > Control Panel > Shared Folder, and check the permissions in Permissions > System internal user.
- If you choose to use an existing folder, the Shared Folder drop-down menu will only display the shared folders that the logged in user has the Read/Write permission of, and that has not yet been used as recording storage.
- The name of a recording storage is case sensitive and can contain 1 to 32 Unicode characters, excluding the following symbols: ~ ` ! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) = + [ { ] } \ | ; : ' " < > / ?
The first character cannot be a minus sign or a space, and the last character cannot be a space. - To ensure system performance, external devices such as USBs are not supported as recording storages.
To mount a remote folder:
- Click Add > Mount Remote Storage.
- Choose Use a mounted remote folder or Mount remote folder and click Next.
- If you selected Use a mounted remote folder:
- If your Synology NAS/NVR is the host server in a CMS architecture, please select a server from the Source drop-down menu.
- From the Remote folder drop-down menu, select a mounted remote folder as the new recording storage.
- If you selected Mount remote folder:
- If your Synology NAS/NVR is the host server in a CMS architecture, please select a server from the Source drop-down menu.
- If the remote server requires access privileges to the remote folder, enter the credentials of the remote server in the User name and Password fields.
- Click Browse to select or create a destination folder for mounting the remote folder. The selected path will display in Local folder field.
- In the Remote folder field, specify the remote folder path in the format of [\\Server_name\Folder_name], such as [\\192.168.0.2\share] or [\\chad\cheeseburger\pictures].
- Tick Mount automatically on startup if you want to mount this remote folder on every system startup or reboot.
- Click Finish to complete the setup.
Note:
- Once you use this feature, your Surveillance Station will be granted the Read/Write permission of the shared folders to host the mounted remote folder. You can go to the edit page of such shared folders in DSM > Control Panel > Shared Folder, and check the permissions in Permissions > System internal user.
- If you choose to use a mounted remote folder, the Remote folder drop-down menu will only display the remote folders that are mounted to the shared folders of which the logged in user has the Read/Write permission.
- When you click Browse, the page will only display the shared folder of which the logged in user has the Read/Write permission.
- Supportable maximum number of concurrent mounted remote folders is limited to 100.
- The mounting must be able to work via the CIFS service.
- The mounting via the NFS service is not supported by Surveillance Station.
- To mount a remote folder, you must select a subfolder under a local shared folder to complete the setup.
- The mounting feature is available on certain Synology product models only.
To delete a recording storage:
- Select a recording storage and click Delete.
- In the confirmation window, choose to Retain or Delete the shared/mounted folder in DSM.
- Click OK to confirm the deletion.
Note:
- The default recording storage "surveillance" cannot be deleted.
- You cannot delete a recording storage to which any cameras are currently corresponding.
To edit a recording storage:
- Select a recording storage and click Edit.
- Go to the Information tab.
- Enter a new Name and Description for the recording storage.
- If you wish to set the maximum storage size of the recording space, tick the Limit the recording storage up to checkbox and specify the maximum size limit (in gigabytes) for the shared folder.
- If you wish to keep the shared folder used as the recording storage from appearing under "Network" in Windows File Explorer, tick the Hide this shared folder in "My Network Places" checkbox.
- Go to the Advanced tab.
- Change encryption settings.
- Click Finish to complete the settings.
Note:
- You cannot edit the remote folders.
- You cannot change the location of the recording storage once it was created.
- You cannot change the name and location of the default recording storage "surveillance".
To view corresponding cameras:
- Select a recording storage and click Corresponding Cameras to view the list of the cameras which are currently corresponding to the recording storage.
To reconnect a remote folder:
- If Surveillance Station fails to connect to a remote folder, the status of the corresponding camera will become Storage unavailable, and the recording storage will display as Disconnected in the recording storage list.
- Click Reconnect to try to mount the remote folder again.
- If the remote folder is reconnected successfully, the corresponding camera will resume working normally.
To edit encrypted recording storage:
- If you select an unencrypted shared folder, the Encryption drop-down menu is disabled.
- If you select an encrypted shared folder which is mounted, you can choose Unmount from the Encryption drop-down menu to unmount the folder, or Export key to save the encryption key.
- If you select an encrypted shared folder which is unmounted, you can choose Mount from the Encryption drop-down menu, and then enter or import the encryption key to mount the folder for access.
Note:
- It is very important to remember the encryption key. It is strongly recommended that you export and save the encryption key. If you forget or lose the key, there is no way to rescue the encrypted data.
- When an encrypted shared folder is mounted, you cannot rename it or change its volume location. You can only make changes after unmounting it.
