Some permission entries in Windows File Explorer are changed to "Unix User\xxxx". What can I do?

Symptoms

When you right-click on a folder or file in Windows File Explorer and go to the Security tab, you may find some permission entries have been changed to "Unix User\Any Number" (e.g., "Unix User\1074").

Diagnosis

The user or group associated with this permission entry was deleted. The number in the permission entry stands for the unique identifier (UID/GID) of the deleted user or group.

Resolution

Simply remove this permission entry since the user or group no longer exists on your Synology NAS. To do so, click on the permission entry and click Edit. Then click Remove and Apply in the pop-up window.

Notes:

  1. If the permission entry is an inherited permission, the check marks under the Allow or Deny column will be grayed out. Such permission entry cannot be removed directly. Go to the source folder from which this permission entry is inherited and remove the source permission entry.
