How do I back up data on my computer using Synology Drive Client?

Purpose

Synology Drive Client allows you to create scheduled backup tasks to back up files on your computer to a Synology Drive server, as well as create versions of these files that can be restored or downloaded when needed. This article shows you how to set up a backup task and how to restore previous versions of files using Synology Drive Client.

Resolution

Download and install the desktop client

  1. Go to Download Center.
  2. Click the Select product type drop-down menu and select NAS.
  3. Click the Select your Synology Product drop-down menu and select your Synology NAS model.
  4. Go to the OS Version field and select your DSM version.
  5. Go to the Desktop Utilities tab, find Synology Drive Client, and click Download.
  6. Select the version for your computer's operating system and click Download.

Start your backup task

  1. Run the Synology Drive Client on your computer. Click Start Now.
  2. Connect to your Synology NAS running Synology Drive Server using either its domain name, QuickConnect ID, or IP address (IPv6 supported). You can also click Search () to search all Synology NAS on your local area network.1
  3. Enter the username and password. Click Next.
  4. Select Backup Task. Click Next.
  5. Select your backup source and destination. You can change the destination by clicking Select.
  6. Click Backup Rules to configure further settings.
  7. Tick Keep locally deleted files on the remote backup destination folder so that the files already backed up to your Synology NAS will not be deleted even if you delete them on your computer. Click Apply to save the changes.
  8. Click Next.
  9. Choose one of the three backup modes. We highly recommended selecting Continuous backup because it helps avoid data loss. However, in this example, we will demonstrate how to configure a Scheduled backup because it requires more steps. Click Next.
  10. Select backup days, frequency, start time, and end time from each menu.
  11. Tick Continue any uncompleted backup tasks when the system is in operation again so that the backup task will continue to run after recovering from interruptions such as an unexpected system shutdown.
  12. Click Next.
  13. You will see a summary of your backup task in the last step of the wizard. Click Done to confirm.
  14. Double click on the Synology Drive Client icon in the notification area to view your backup information and progress.

Download or restore a previous version of synced files from Synology Drive server

  1. Open Synology Drive Client, go to Backup Task, and click Restore.
  2. Select the file you want to restore. You can choose a particular version of the file by selecting a specific date and time from the Time menu on top. Click Restore.2
  3. You can also download files to a specific destination by selecting a file and clicking Download.

Notes:

  1. For Synology Drive Client to properly connect to Synology Drive Server, make sure port 6690 of your Synology NAS is opened.
  2. To restore a previous version, the folder on your Synology NAS that you are backing up data to must have version control enabled. Go to DSM > Synology Drive Admin Console > Team Folder > Versioning to configure version control.
